All the tragic events in “Macbeth” can be attributed to Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and the three witches. Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to act, he prioritizes ambition over conscience, and the witches implant the desire for kingship in his mind. Nonetheless, I hold that Macbeth is primarily responsible as he had the option to kill or not kill King Duncan. His driving force was a thirst for power and ambition. While some may disagree, ultimately it was Macbeth who brought this upon himself. He could have considered his options carefully and pondered whether he truly desired regicide. This aligns with the previous notion that we all possess choices in life and must deliberate before taking action.
Macbeth is responsible for the tragedy in the play. His excessive ambition and narrow perspective caused the events to unfold as they did. Although hesitant at first, Macbeth’s ambition eventually took over. His actions following Duncan’s murder, including seeing Banquo’s ghost and reacting strongly to Duncan’s death, raised suspicions about his role in the crime. Without Macbeth’s ambition and guilt, the course of events would have been altered.
