This year the COVID-19 has imposed a severe challenge on SMEs, the role of which in economics has been a great concern for me during my major study of political science. Some business forms are gradually emerging, such as e-commerce. I regard this as a transitional point and hope to become an economic forecaster and analyst in the future, collecting and analyzing various market data. To have a deep understanding, I use my summer to complete a Coursera course of Managerial Economics and Business Analysis Specialization, which improves on decision-making and concrete my future career goal in this direction. I hope to learn the theories and tools to analyze economic data and phenomena through my further studying in the Department of Economics’ Bachelor of art. Meanwhile, I can fulfill my current study and setting a foundation for my future career.
After I took the microeconomic class, I implemented the principles leaned from the classroom as the treasurer of the debate club in my college. I kept track of the club’s expenses, strictly enforce the scope and standards of all expenditures, and manage the funds properly. Besides that, I strengthened the club’s financial management system, strictly enforced financial discipline, and supervised the club’s proper use of funds. Since then, I have found my interest in economics and eager to build up my knowledge in further study in the Economics Department to achieve my goal of becoming an economic analyst.
A great number of SMEs were impacted by COVID-19, also included my family. Being an affected person, I concerned about this situation and wondered to minimize the losses under similar circumstances. Combining the current study of political science and my future study in economics will eliminate my concern. Our life is inseparable from the diverse services of SMEs and more obvious during the epidemic that forced SMEs out of the market. For instance, The Mona Poke Shop, a restaurant nearby UW, was permanently closed during this period. In the case of guarantying academic performance, I’m looking forward to obtaining a certificate in international economics, and these courses aroused my interest. I believe a double major in political science and economics can extravagate more potentials and protect these small businesses in my future career.
