An Opinion Why Christopher Columbus is Not a Hero

Table of Content

In my opinion Christopher Columbus is not a hero; many people believed he was the one who discovered America but in reality Native Americans were there far much longer for him to have had”discovered” it. Columbus thought that the Native American were just naive heathens, he thought he could manipulate them in various ways and nothing would be said to him. He thought the Native Americans could be exploited, while in reality they were people just like him; they might not have dressed like him or havee spoken the same language but they were human beigns just like everyone else. In many stories you are told as you grow up that Christopher Columbus was the first person to discover America and you think that he is the reason why you don’t have to go to school that Monday. You grow up thinking he was such an amazing person only by knowing he discover america and thinking he was helping the Native Americans. You learn more facts and details about Christopher Columbus, I started thinking by the time i was in fourth grade that he did not discover America that Native Americans were there long before him.

I never did any research on him though, if he had really discovered America or not, It was just hearing a discussion my teachers just basically say he did not discover America. I never knew the facts on what he had done to the Native Americans . On how he thought he was so much better then they were just because they looked like they had a lack of culture and religion, that they were nothing like the people on the other side of the world. Columbus had came to the Americas by accident, in reality he thought he was at India which was why he called the Native Americans “Indians” since he thought he was there. Columbus came to what we call now the Caribbeans, they never really got to North America after quite some time. While being in the Americas he writes on a descriptive account of his rape of an Indian women, how can this make someone a hero? And the thing about this is that the Rape of the Native American womans were one of the less violent things that Columbus and his crew made during his trips. How do we celebrate a man that created a wave of genocide and killed thousands of innocent natives, How does any of this make this man a hero in any kind of way. He made the natives work; the woman were working on the field as the men were working on mines to find him the gold.

Natives were against his way of treating them as slaves they were just like regular humans beings but they had no say in anything that he did because if you did not agree, you were bascially going to get killed. When Columbus came back by his second voage, he brought many Native Americans back to make them slaves to his queen, on the way back to his country many did not make it and other died due to the hard slave work they were put to do. Columbus is no kind a way a hero to me, the things that occur to the Native Americans through his blessing is just horrible. How can someone call this men a hero, he is in no kind a way a hero. The actions that he has done to the people, making it seem as if he was better than all of them, in which Christopher Columbus was just a liar. Society thinks this man is a hero cause we have a holiday named after him and since he did “discover” America. In no kind a way he is a hero, all that was going through this men head was on how these people can be explotied, the profit he can make with them. So can you still call this guy a hero now
