Although Napoleon continues to modernize and revolutionize he farm, these projects are not for the benefit of the animals and go completely against the original decrees. With each new technological project, one Of the very few remaining strands Of respect towards Old Major and the commandments is plucked away. These advances cause the pigs to become greedy and this self-indulgence links in with the cutting of the rations and slavery of the other animals.
The pigs taking the apples and milk is just the start of a propaganda filled campaign in which excuse after excuse is made for the lowly living conditions of the other animals and the far superior state of living of the pigs. For example Squealer often refers to the importance of the pigs keeping the farm running in an attempt to excuse the much higher living conditions of the pigs. As the reign of the pigs lengthens, more and more biased ideas are put into place and it is only a matter of time before the pigs effectively enslave the other livestock.
With the friendship between the pigs and the humans strengthen, it can only mean disaster and a future of slavery for the helpless animals. The neighboring farmers arriving at the ‘Manama Farm marks the beginning of the end with the pigs essentially become humans and the other returns, slaves. For example as shown on page eighty-five: “they were unsure whether to be more frightened of the pigs or the human visitors. Despite the rebellion successfully taking place, none of the advantages, which derive from the rise of power, affect the other animals positively, rather, negatively. The pigs morphing into humans can only mean disaster for the other beasts. The gradual cutting of the rations is yet another negative effect which the other animals have the misfortune of experiencing. Immediately following the success of the rebellion, food is at a maximum and it seems each animal has bright future without the torturous labor experienced under Jones’ rule.
However over the next few months, the quality and quantity of the food deteriorates despite the workload rapidly increasing for the other animals. Snowball’s exiling marks the end of the ‘golden days’ and before long all the animals, minus the pigs and the dogs, are more or less reliving the torment of their past. However, Squealer’s continual excuses and misleading stats keep the other animals from rebelling. Squealer constantly brings up unreliTABLE evidence to support his arguments but his rather stupid audience can only odd as if they understand.
He excuses the fact that the pigs have far superior meals by stating that they need the brain food and the consumption is for the sake of the other animals. By the end of the novel, all the misuse of power dramatically changes the personality of the pigs. With such power, comes responsibility and trust from peers, unfortunately for the other animals, the pigs fall victim to their own greed. The change in the pigs can be summed up in one sentence: ‘They looked from pig to man, and man to pig but it was impossible to tell them apart. ”
