This paper was especially hard for me to write. Usually there is a very strict explanation as to what is needed and expected. However, with this paper it was different. We got a statement and were able to choose the way in which we wanted to portray the idea or thought. To me that is difficult. I have never been one to be short on words and can normally be found talking to whom ever will listen. The topic that we must write on is “Bravery in the face of Adversity. ” One definition of bravery I found was ” a quality of spirit that enables one to face danger or pain without showing fear.

Adversity has been defined as a condition marked by misfortune or bad luck. My first thought was to write about the Civil War and African-American soldiers. I thought of the things they had to endure and how awful those times were for them. I even wrote a poem about it (opening). But when I began to think of how it pertains to my life I realized that each day I must show bravery to make it through. In the past year, I have had to face many tragedies: my mother lost her job and my family has lost over ten members due to death. Not only that, but I am a teenage girl growing up in this crazy world.

In the state of Georgia, the job market has been decreasing drastically. Those who have jobs are thankful whether they are teachers, CPAs or a “team member” at the local McDonalds. My mom is not one of those fortunate enough to have a job. For the past few months, we have lived off her savings, child support, and food stamps. Now things are beginning to get down to the wire. When my mom wakes up in the morning, she puts on her best happy face, gets us ready for our day and returns home to pursue the job search. She knows what bad luck tastes like, what it feels like and what it can do to a pay check.

My mom is the definition of bravery in the face of adversity. No one really knows that we are almost out of money. In fact, we like to keep things that way. But when given this assignment I knew that one of the best ways to relate this to my life was to look inside my own four walls. Bravery is “a quality of spirit that enables one to face danger and pain without showing fear. ” We are in danger of losing our lifestyle. My mom must face the heartache and pain that comes from feeling like she is unable to provide for her family. I help out when I can. Mom has that quality of spirit.

She can face the problems of our lives without showing fear. I know she is scared. But she hides it well from me and my young brothers because she is brave, she is strong and with God, she can face this adversity. Psalms 46:10 says “Be Still and know that I am God… ” In October my Granny passed away. In less than twenty-four hours my aunt passed away, followed by a dear friend. More recently, my great uncle died. He was like a father to many of us who, at one time in our lives, were fatherless. I have attended more funeral this year than any one person should have to.

Each and every day someone wakes up to an empty spot on the bed beside them, or an empty house, or even without a parent or role model. My family has had to show great bravery in basically a long string of what seems like bad luck. Some of the deaths were from old age, some were from illness, and one was done intentionally before his time should have been up. I believe that if he had someone to teach him about God’s love and how when everything seems to be going wrong one can turn to him, that I would still have an eighteen year old cousin, who loved life and what it has to offer.

If he had shown true bravery he would still be here today. He showed fear by taking his own life and not trusting God to make a way. It would have helped if he hadn’t been raised in a home where there was no God. His mother doesn’t believe in Him. Even still, I believe that showing bravery by continuing with life and its hardships takes work. Adversity and bad luck seem to follow some around like a rain cloud. But with God’s love and power, He can grant us an understanding to deal with the things that seem like too much to handle.

Bravery in the face of adversity means facing things out of your control with poise. I cannot think of a better example than my mother and my family. During the Civil War, everyone was against the blacks becoming soldiers. No one wanted them except to do work. Everyday they faced adversity and everyday when they returned I can imagine there was great rejoicing. Facing fears is a small thing it seems when you first learn in in kindergarten but then with maturity doubt come. Facing adversity is harder now. But I can have bravery as soon as I ask it from God.
