The style of leadership which will help me out getting my dream job at the USGA as a Financial manager is the democratic type. This type of leadership is good for this job because I could listen to other peoples opinions on the budget and what went wrong in the department. It is also good for talking to the employees about their work style in reaching our goals that we have set.
The few leadership theories that resembles me are the Path-Goal theory, Vroom and Yetton’s Perspective model (1973), and Herzberg’s Two-Factor theory. The leadership theory that I am the strongest in is the Path-Goal theory in connecting to the department members.
The path goal is my strong suit because of the because I am a supportive person, achievement-oriented, and encourage participation by every member of the department on the project. The supportive part of the theory I will help the employees if they have a problem with the job or going through something in their personal life that is affecting their work.
When we set the goals I am a person who strives to achieve the goals even if it means putting in extra hours with the employees in the department. The participative part I would want everyone in the project no one should be left out in helping out of the projects assigned to our department. All three part of this theory will lead me to be a good manager when I follow this at my dream job at the USGA. The theory that is very similar to the Path-Goal theory is the theory of Vroom and Yetton’s Perspective model (1973).
Vroom and Yetton’s Perspective model (1973) has five different leadership styles that all have different traits that will help me in this dream job. The two autocratic theories I would make the decision based off the information of people then see how the other employees react to the decision I make. The autocratic leads up to the next theory of the consultative theory which is similar to the autocratic, but the only difference between the two is that the consultative leader shares the information then makes the decision.
The consultative I would use is about adding hours for the week to reach the goals with the whole department to get the opinions before doing so. The last leadership theory of Vroom and Yetton’s Perspective model is the group theory that generates alternatives for the decision if that does not work when they giving their opinions. The type of leader that acts like how I do when I stand over the golf ball and feel confidence in my swing is the leadership theory of transformational.
The transformational leader has confidence that their department will achieve the goals that they have set for that quarter or the year that will lead them to reward when achieved. When at the dream job of the USGA I will achieve the goals that given to me be expressing self confidence in my work ethic. After achieving the goals I will celebrate with the department by rewarding them with going out to lunch the next Friday.
Once we achieve the goals from the last quarter it leads us into more pressure to achieve the next goals that we set for the next quarter. All of these theories will make me a great leader for my dream job by listening to employees to see what they think is the best decision with their personal opinions. The personal side for these theories that I will use at my dream job.
The personal side to the theories of Path-Goal theory, Vroom and Yetton’s Perspective model (1973), and Herzberg’s Two-Factor theory I use in school and the golf game. The Path-Goal theory I use in school with the group projects through helping group members and when we do our work it is rewarded with a good grade. When I play golf I use this theory by putting in the work to get the future satisfaction of achieving my goals that I have set.
Vroom and Yetton’s Perspective theory in school with how making decisions the person who is the leader of the group project I am in they make it own their own or with group opinions. For golf I make decisions on my own when deciding whether to play it risky or play it safe with little bit of information. Herzberg’s Two-Factor theory is a big part in school with the project in taking responsibility as leader to assign people to their parts of the project to accomplish the goal. The golf part to this is the growth towards the goal by practicing and recognizing the parts of the game that are holding you back from achieving your goals.
Self Assessment
The strengths of my leadership are that I am high directive and supportive in both the leadership styles of consultative and participative. Consultative style I will develop a supportive relationship with the other employees in the department so I can get their input on decisions. The other of this theory is that I will help the employees if they have any problem at all making their goal or with their work ethic.
Another style that I am strong in is the participative in giving self to the worker if they are feeling down over something in a similar manner to consultative leadership style. Compared to the last style participative is a self motivated type when the employees themselves have the confidence in their self to reach goals. I am self motivated person with this upcoming spring golf season for the team I have my own goals I am set out to achieve them. The weaknesses that I have are mostly I can not give authority on task or make my decisions on my own without someone giving me the information about the decision.
The leadership styles that I have the hardest time with are autocratic and empowerment both have low supportive styles. The autocratic is one my weaknesses because of how they make decisions without the input of the employees when I am working my dream job I want input from my employees before I make the wrong choice. With this style I feel like it would be bad to work like this because the employees would not be happy at all with decision that you made.
Empowerment is the other weakness of mine because it is hard for me to step to be the authority when comes to managing certain situations. I will not let the employees do their daily tasks without much information on what to do for that day so we could achieve goals for the quarter. The weaknesses I need to keep getting stronger in to become a great leader and also keep working on my strengths.
Reflection
The biggest improvement area I need to work on the most is empowerment with the authority part to it and the willingness to make decisions on myself. I will make the improvements in these areas when working in group projects I will step up to be the leader of the group. The willingness to make decisions on my own in a project without any information I will improve by just making the decision.
The only part in making in the decision myself if the group does not like then I will ask the group for alternatives on the topic. Even my strengths I have to make a little bit of improvement upon in all my areas of my strengths. The main strength that I want to grow upon is building relationships with my employees at my dream job. It shows that the different leadership styles will help me get close with my employees at my dream job of USGA as a Financial Manager.
