Can you imagine receiving a brand new Mustang as a gift from your parents at the age of 16?
Driving at a speed of approximately 25 miles per hour, you manage to attract everyone’s gaze without breaking the speed limit. Additionally, as an unforeseen delight, a soft breeze gently tousles your hair while you hover 12 feet above the ground.
Engaging in the activity of skating puts yourself at risk of danger, specifically when falling on your back. This can lead to a serious head injury. Aaron Spohn, a renowned ramp builder and expert in skateboarding events and professional skaters, explains that people often envision inline skaters wearing bright orange clothes, carrying a waist pack, and sporting neon sunglasses.
S1 Perhaps you perceive me as someone who owns $35.00 generic skates, using my arms more than my legs, and slowly gliding down the street at a pace of one mile per day. However, this is not the kind of skating I am referring to. I am referring to aggressive inline skating.
There may be confusion due to the different aspects and numerous people involved in inline skating. Currently, there are around 12.3 million children participating in inline skating.
In addition, a significant statistic shows a participation rate of 57%.
Comparing the participation rates from last year, inline skating saw a 2% increase while basketball experienced a 4.9% decrease and football only had a 5.8% increase. This suggests that inline skating is a sport on the rise, which you may already be involved in.
Regardless of your interest in inline aggressive skating, it is widely regarded as a sport that offers numerous advantages in physical, social, and mental aspects. Inline skating has been a significant part of my life since seventh grade and has become an integral passion for me. It dominates my life as a sport that I am truly devoted to, which is why I am giving this speech. During the summer months, I dedicate a minimum of four hours or more each day to skate.
Having been acquainted with the manager of Team Paradise, a well-known mail order store, I have also assisted in the production of locally made CDS Detroit products in Grosse Pointe. Today, I would like to discuss the physical, social, and mental advantages of inline skating. Drawing from personal experience and information gathered from magazines and various sources, it is evident that one popular misconception is that inline skating does not offer physical fitness benefits.
Inline skating offers various physical benefits, as confirmed by the Henry Ford Heart and Vascular Institute in Michigan. It is a sport that surprisingly and positively affects the body. One of its remarkable advantages is the improvement of cardiovascular fitness. Additionally, it serves as an ideal means for strengthening muscles with minimal impact. Remarkably, skating elevates the heart rate more than any other regular activity.
When you run instead of skate, your heart rate is lower compared to skating. Additionally, skating offers excellent fitness advantages. For example, if you weigh 140 lbs. and skate at a speed of 18 miles per hour, which is typical, you can burn 600 calories within one hour.
The study conducted at the Ford center demonstrated impressive findings. Skating in an upright position was shown to increase calorie burning by 10 percent. Moreover, the study revealed that traveling at a pace three miles per hour faster than average resulted in a 50 percent increase in calorie burning. Therefore, by skating fast for one hour, one could burn off one fourth of their daily intake.
The concept of low impact training in inline skating is effectively supported. According to Frank Fedel, who participated in a study conducted at the Ford center, activities such as running impose impacts of up to six times the body weight on the joints. In contrast, inline skating does not involve such pounding. It is emphasized that skating contributes to the development of the knee joint due to the sport’s low impact nature, facilitating muscle building around the knee. Additionally, joint acceleration during inline skating can reach up to seven times faster than that observed in cycling and similar sports.
Even Frank Andreu, a professional cyclist for the Motorola team, incorporates inline skating into his training regimen to stay fit. 8 Skating also offers surprising social advantages, such as acts of kindness from strangers. In Box magazine, Andy Kruse recounts one of the typical encounters experienced by skaters.
After spending three months living alone in a tent, Andy encountered skater Angie Walton. Unfortunately, his bike got stolen and he approached Angie to ask if he could stay at her house. Although Angie kindly permitted him to reside in her backyard, she couldn’t accommodate him inside as there were already numerous unpaid individuals occupying the house. It’s worth noting that her benevolence is not limited to this instance.
Aaron Spohn offers free accommodations in his home and has three halfpipes in his backyard. Skateboarding is an activity that fosters social acceptance, even for those who may not typically feel accepted. The City Rollers, a skate group based in Detroit with 1,200 members, provides ample opportunities to meet new people while skating. One example of skateboarding’s transformative impact is Michael Buechner, who experienced a significant change after the passing of his grandfather. Previously an excellent student, Buechner found himself contemplating suicide.
Eventually, he endured being pumped or tortured by his gang, leading to his house being robbed. However, he eventually took up skating, resulting in a positive transformation. Recently, he was featured in a skating magazine distributed nationwide and was given a complimentary pair of $300 skates by Roces, the skate industry equivalent of Nike. This story belongs to Matt Mantz, who is currently fourteen, but was once an ordinary kid.
After starting his skating career, he gained sponsorship and was featured on the Disney channel, ABC movie, and ESPN’s Extreme Games. The exposure he received surely had a positive impact on his social and mental well-being. Now, he earns respect from people much older than him and interacts with more girls in a year than the average 14-year-old would. As summer drew to a close, our local skate group was prominently covered in the newspaper and featured on the six o’clock news.
Over time, skaters from different towns would join us in skating, and despite the short duration of knowing them, it felt like we had been friends for a long time. Undoubtedly, being featured in a popular magazine, appearing on ESPN, or collaborating with unfamiliar people can enhance both your social status and mental well-being. The mental advantages of inline skating, especially aggressive skating, are often disregarded.
As previously mentioned, any of the social benefits would also be considered as mental benefits as they contribute to improved self-esteem. Aggressive inline skating also boosts confidence and offers unique experiences to children that would otherwise be unattainable. In the case of Mike Buechner, Aaron Spohn states that he now possesses something he previously lacked: motivation. Buechner has returned to school. In an interview with Andy Kruse, an inline skater sponsored by K2 and former member of Team Rollerblade, he highlights one of the major advantages of inline skating: the absence of coaches who dictate what to do or make one run around the field when mistakes occur.
My punishment is the act of hitting the pavement, while my reward is the feeling of self-accomplishment. S13 I also believe that falling and sustaining bruises is more enjoyable than enduring being screamed at by both my coach and a portion of my team. Skating has helped me with this aspect as well. According to his father, Matty Mantz has also gained confidence through skating – it gives him confidence, concentration, and contributes to his personal growth.
Despite moving to California on his own to pursue his passion for skating, he has become the 7th top ranked street skater in the world. Furthermore, inline skating offers a mental advantage by providing an exhilarating rush. The adrenaline obtained from skating exceeds that of engaging in a fight, navigating across a flat surface to achieve a goal, sliding on dirt while being struck with a ball, or even shooting a ball through a hoop.
In this skating video, you will witness the satisfaction and confidence that comes from successfully nailing a trick after days of trying. It is a different feeling compared to simply running across a field. One of the highlights of this video is the highly publicized rail slide performed by David Kollasch. This clip gained him respect and recognition as it was showcased on MTV, ESPN, PASS, and featured in various magazines. As you watch the video, you can even hear the exhilaration when a skater successfully lands off a handrail, resulting in screams of excitement.
You will also witness a crash by Brian Smith near the end. Even though I couldn’t capture it on tape, he makes several attempts afterwards to perfect the railslide, which ultimately boosts his confidence. It is most accurately described when he exclaims, essentially, “That irritated me. Now I’m determined to conquer this rail.”
AJ Jackson, a sponsored Bauer skater who grew up in South Central Los Angeles, describes figure skating as the most incredible and beautiful sport of all time. Unlike football, baseball, and hockey, which are team sports, figure skating is an individual activity that provides a sense of relief. Surprisingly, I had a thrilling experience last summer that gave me a great rush.
After skating at the local park, I ended up skating alongside cars in a 25 speed zone. I was going approximately 20 miles per hour when, unexpectedly, the green light changed to red. Due to my lack of brakes, I unintentionally continued through the red light while expressing an inappropriate comment for a school environment.
After passing it, I observed a police car stationed at the gas station on the intersection, but I evaded capture. If you inquire with individuals in my skate group, you will hear anecdotes of them gripping onto the rear of semis and, to their delight, being pursued by police but managing to escape via roads inaccessible to cars. All these pursuits generate an unmatched adrenaline surge.
Skating offers a distinctive mental exhilaration that cannot be matched by any other sport. It also provides unique experiences and boosts confidence in all aspects of life. Additionally, skating allows you to connect with courteous individuals. Furthermore, it presents physical advantages including cross-training opportunities, more calorie burning than running, and the strengthening of both lower and upper body muscles.
Inline skating is a remarkable sport with many benefits for mental, physical, and social well-being. It has personally had a major impact on my life and I believe it is the greatest sport. Furthermore, I firmly believe that its popularity will soon exceed other sports worldwide, including America. Skaters can be found all over the world, from Kuwait and Africa to Australia and Alaska, as well as Singapore and England.
According to forecasts, skateboarding is projected to have the highest growth rate by 2001 and has been included in the National Sporting Goods Association’s top 20 participation sports in America. This surpasses football and softball while notable absences from the list are baseball, skiing, snowboarding, tennis, and soccer. Skateboarding offers numerous positive effects across all three aspects and it is hoped that you recognize its various benefits.
