Flatland: Dimension and Super Square

Table of Content

Flatland is a vast plane where squares, triangles and other figures live and move freely. But they don’t know of our 3 dimensional. They are figures that have neither height nor depth. It starts with the dream of Arthur Square. Arthur Square dreamed of a point, a square parallel to itself 8 times that formed a circular formation and in the middle a super square. But he was waked up by his wife, telling him to escort his granddaughter Hex to school before going to his work. On the way to Hex’s school, he explained the connection between each figures.

He also explained that the more sides, you have the more angles, you have the higher your position in society. In that case the highest positioned figures were the circles, believing they have infinite sides and angles. The circles make laws that other figures obey. Then after successfully escorting his granddaughter to school he rushed rapidly to his work. Then he was scolded by their supervisor a circle. Then several minutes later the highest positioned circle called all employees for a meeting.

Discussing about the fourth dimension, then in the Visual Aid for the meeting he saw an exact figure like in his dream. In his house while they are eating their dinner, Hex asked about the meaning of dimension. He explained the point, the line and a figure. But Hex got an additional question about having a super square in the middle of the circular formation of the 6 parallel points, lines and figure. Hex also included that the figure she formed maybe the thing that is in area 33H.

Being a protected grandfather he shouted telling her not to go area 33H because the council doesn’t tolerate curiosity. Hex ran to her room crying. Then Arthur’s wife explained to Hex that Arthur is just protecting her. Then she gave her the things of Hex’s mother. Then while Arthur was sleeping he was sent to another dimension. He saw the point with its zero dimension and the line with it’s 1st dimension. Then he was returned to his 2nd dimension. Then a circle named Spherius introduced himself to him but he wasn’t just a circle.

He is a circle in a 2nd dimension’s eyes but a sphere in 3rd to fully explain what is the 3rd dimension he brought Arthur in the 3rd from the 2nd world. He explained all and he witnessed the truth. After that he was returned to the 2nd dimension. In the morning he tried to find Hex to her that she was right. But Arthur’s wife said that Hex left their house. Then a guard said he just spotted a figure heading to area 33H. Then he remembered that Hex was planning to go to area 33H. With a little help from his friend, he drove to area 33H.

When he get there, he find Hex and told her that she was right. He let Hex enter the super square or simply the cube. Then Hex also saw the whole truth, while Arthur was arrested. Then Arthur explained about 3rd dimension but the council never listened and always asked for evidence. Having Arthur guilty, Spherius brought Arthur to the 3rd dimension. And he let Hex explained it all. Making Hex appear from nowhere and having Arthur disappeared is enough evidence of the 3rd dimensional world’s existence.

Hex explained it well and all the other Flatlanders believed her. And so Arthur square was not guilty. The Lesson is even you’re just an average citizen in your society you must do something to change you societies wrong beliefs and to add knowledge. Like the point is the zero dimension because they can’t see things around them. The line is the 1st dimension because can only see the things within the line. Figures without height and depth are the 2nd dimension. And last but not the least, the 3rd dimension which can move in any direction.
