My first semester in college has been a roller coaster ride, full of ups and downs but at the end of the day, you will be full of laughter and joy! They say college is not for everyone, but I believe if you put your best effort, it will be so rewarding. College can be the best years of your life but from time to time you may struggle. I am very glad I choose to attend Dyersburg State Community College and I will explain why. The first day was full of struggles and running back and forth from different buildings. Dyersburg State is a smaller community college, so I couldn’t imagine the stress I would have if I attended a University. The first week of college, I tried my absolute best to get very organized and try to figure everything out such as my online class and my assignments online. I was very overwhelmed by all the new materials and assignments with college. While being in high school, I never had a teacher really prepare me for college, and I really wish that would have been different. I wish I knew beforehand how to work their website, online library and how to be successful in my online classes. Everyone has a different opinion about college and I want to explain my opinions about college at Dyersburg State Community College. Now that I’ve started college that I’d like to share with you, why you should attend college.
First, my reactions to college are much different then how I’d expected them to be. In college you have students come right to college after high school and older students wanting to come back to continue their education. I enjoy many things about college, such as not being at school from seven to three, not having seven classes a day and also, I enjoy the most is the fact that I can wear what I want. In high school, you could never even wear shorts when it is over hundred degrees. I have time to actually study and finish my homework when I get out of school. When it is time to change classes depending on how your schedule is set up, you can either have all your classes close together or you might have to run half way across campus to your next class. I expected to know more people than I do, my classes are made up of people from the majority of the surrounding counties. Most of my classes only have one, at the maximin two people that attended my high school, but I also will remember through my college semesters, I will meet many new lifetime friends.
Next, I have many plans for my first year of college. I plan to learn how to better manage time between work and school. I also want to make a lot of new friends and be able to make memories that will last a lifetime. I plan to figure out what university I will attend after I finish my two years at DSCC. My two choices in mind are UTM and UM. I also need to decide on which direction I want to take in my major. With it being my first semester in college, it is very had finding time to study and do all of my homework from each of my classes, then going to work almost every day. Closing every night is probably the hardest thing for me to do right now since it keeps me from doing anything school related. I do not have a lot of plans for myself right now because for me this is a learning experience and I need to get use to my school schedule, then telling them to adjust my work schedule for me.
Last, I am going to talk about is my career. As of right now my major is nursing, and I have a few ideas which direction I want to take my career. While I am at DSCC, I plan to learn a little bit of everything. I personally think college gives you a lot of time to figure out not only what you want to do in life, but also gives you time to figure out who you are as a person. I know I will have to take more science, A&P and similar classes closer to my career field after I get my basic classes out of the way. I have always wanted to be someone who works in the trauma center of the med, because I like a ton of action and stuff that gets my adrenaline going. One reason I would love to work in the setting of an E.R is because just like my mother, we love to help others, always love to solve problems and we absolute love the adrenaline it will give you. I am not a person who likes to do the same thing over and over, every day without ever seeing something different go on. I also plan to minor in something, so I will be able to have a backup if something were to ever happen, such as teaching elementary or special education.
That was my three topics about college my reactions, plans, and my career. College is nothing like what people told me it was. I don’t have a lot of plans for myself right now, but I am going to start making plans or goals. I have an idea of what specific direction I want to take with my career and I plan to minor in something, so I will have a back-up plan just in case life throws something unexpected at me. In college, you may pass a few classes and feel like giving up but in the end, you will have your degree and be so proud of yourself.
