Studies on interpersonal attraction indicate that individuals are primarily attracted to those who they find physically attractive and who are nearby.

When it comes to understanding our attraction towards certain individuals, person perception plays a crucial role. Person perception involves the process of forming impressions of others, which greatly influences our level of attraction towards them, even in short interactions. These initial impressions heavily shape our perception of individuals by taking into account their positive and negative attributes. While people may seem primarily drawn to positive characteristics, negative information tends to have a stronger impact and tends to overshadow all the positives.

Researchers have found that there are five elements that influence how we perceive attractiveness in others. These factors include physical attractiveness, proximity, competence, mutual attraction or liking, and similarity or complementarity of interests and beliefs. Physical appearance plays a vital role in the initial stages of relationships as it impacts interpersonal interactions. Nevertheless, its impact tends to diminish over time. The factor of proximity is also important as individuals must be near each other to form a connection and enhance their understanding. This closeness can result in either dislike or stronger bonds.
