Talent From The Unknown: Big Part Of It Is My Parents Influence

Table of Content

Talents can come from the unexpected area or person. For example, basketball player Lebron James born in Akron, Ohio would now become one of the top elite players apart of the National Basketball Association. Growing up in a rural area and having to survive daily I would take every opportunity to learn from community leaders. This would allow me to learn the basic leadership skills that would lead to an augmented childhood. Similarly to how Bill and Peg argued about how Edward should use his talents, my parents debated my leadership skills because my father put me in situations where I needed to take charge, and my mother told me to be a bystander, which developed my ability to act in diverse situations and focus during difficult times.

I remember the house in which I grew up had a similar description to a scene in Edward Scissorhands; a nice design of a garden, well-kept and trim, and leading into the house the dust and sight of darkness (Burton). The house reminds me of how my parents struggled to feed us three times a day or to keep the lights on at night. The inspiration for my leadership came from within the church my parents would drag me to every Sunday. The first time I meet Doctor Robert “Bo” Terry in church he asked my parents my age and then the discussion led to my older brother and I to join Cub Scouts and meeting were held on Thursdays. The scene where Tim Burton shows Peg driving Edward back to Peg’s home describes my first meeting of Cub Scouts as I was introduced to my pack of 980 (Burton). I remember the huge introduction and the greeting from all the other scouts. My father drove us to our first meeting where my mom would claim she would need to stay back and watch my younger brother. For the longest time I would think she would watch my brother every meeting to allow a night off for my grandmother and my sisters.

The continuation of my scouting career would allow for me to continue in the ranks of Tiger, Bobcat, Bear, and then Webelos were my leadership skills were born. The first meeting of Webelos was the discussion of how to a two-year program will allow for young boys to prepare for Boy Scouts. The requirements that a Webelo had to complete consist of being active in a den for at least six months, earn four pins among different subjects and finish one of the four subjects a part of the Arrow of Light (Boy Scouts). I would question if it was possible to complete the requirement within a year because I wanted to join my brother who was in Boy Scouts for three years. My den leader said “If you want to complete the requirement you would need to demonstrate the ability to lead;” the next meeting is where my den leader would call for elections. I would be elected as a leader and then tested by having to create the agenda for each meeting and campout in which my den would attend. The completion of my Arrow of Light within a year would allow me to join my brother and allow me to face new adventures and challenges.

My first year of Boy Scouts would see my Scoutmaster retiring and the issue of finding a replacement was not easy to come by. My father surprising me would become the next scoutmaster because of his experience of his completing the rank of life. Contrasting to the scene of Edward Scissorhands where Peg would introduce Edward to clothes to make him seem normal to society is the way my mother would keep my uniform dirty which kept me from going to meetings; this would be the beginning of my mother’s bystander tricks (Burton). The ranking of Boy Scouts consists of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second class, First class, Star, Life, and Eagle; which is the highest rank of Boy Scouts (Troop 137).

Once my farther became scoutmaster, he question my and my brother’s decisions of the action we took and gave us examples of extreme situations and ask how we would handle it. Without my knowledge my mother and father would have long debates about how the stress applied to my brother and I affected our social lives and that it might benefit for my brother and I to be withdrawn. My brother agreed with this similarly to how the community in Edward Scissorhands would want to use the talents of Edward to benefits their needs (Burton). My decision came after the conversation between my farther and I and he stated, “ The reason I pushed your brother and you is because I wanted one or both of you to reach the rank of eagle which I never was able to accomplish.” That would lead for me to promise my farther that I would reach the rank before the age limit of eighteen.

The time would continue like in the film Edward Scissorhands where compared to Edward I started to be more involved in the community due to my leadership skill like Edward was due to his artistic talents (Burton). My mother compares to Kim in that the first hearings about my involvement like the scene where Kim returns from a weekend of camping and the expression where Kim first saw Edward was my mother’s reaction to when she saw me in a Boy Scouts uniform (Troop Leader). The debate would continue as I was put into the leader role of Quartermaster and continue to also be a Patrol leader. The meeting where my mother found out I was becoming a Patrol leader led my mother to drive to the meeting and claim that she would take me home that evening. The church where meetings were held was less than two miles from home and I wondered why my mother was taking the long trip home. When my mother started the car she said, “We need to talk about your involvement in Scouting,” and I thought “Great. Here comes a long talk about why I shouldn’t listen to my father and I need to pick a side.” She claimed that she feared that I was becoming too involved in leading and that this would eventually lead me to join the military once I accomplished my high school diploma.

Fear can lead to a person’s mind thinking two scenarios; either they become scared their entire life or it can inspire motivation (The). The scene in Edward Scissorhands where Edward first experience of fear was when the death of the inventor leading Edward to grow his talents with scissorhands (Burton). Comparing to Edward’s event my experience of fear occurred in sixth grade where the moment I stood up to an eighth grader bully. I remember walking to class with some friends when an eighth grader name Thomas Williams walked up to me and started to pick on my friend John. John’s family was not in the best economic situation and John was forced to wear the same clothes two or three times a week; I would always pack extra lunch for John. Thomas walked up to John and started to punch John’s bag.

The recent film of Captain America The First Avenger would make me repeat the words “Do you want to show some respect?” in the movie theater scene (Ragnarsson). Thomas heard me and said, “What are you going to do about it?” those words put myself over the limit and would allow me to have the strength to take one swing and knocked out Thomas Williams. John looked at me and said, “He’s going to get me later the bus,” and I answer him with “He’s not going to pick on you or anyone else again.” Edward experience in the scene where Edward would kill Jim in order protect Kim and himself and the personal experience allowed for me to understand what a leader must do to protect his friends and family (Burton). Actions that were conducted by Edward and I were for the protection of people that we cared about and shared personal experiences.

Shortly after my sixth-grade year my grandmother passed at the age of eighty-five; it not only devastated my family, but showed how scouting created a family atmosphere for me and my brother. When we would move to South Carolina my current rank would be Star and my brother rank would be Life. My mother was able to convince my brother not to continue, but her attempt to make me quit were like the attempt in Edward Scissorhands where Jim convince Edward to break into Jim’s house which would lead for Edward being arrested, but Edward and I did both actions; Edward did it for Kim and I for my farther (Burton). Soon my brother approached the age limit to achieve the rank of eagle, and I was at the end of receiving my rank of eagle. My mother’s attempts of taking me out of scouting only made me want to improve on my leadership skills.

My mother and farther would ague like Peg and Bill did. My farther wanted to improve my life in lesson is similar how Peg would treat Edward’s scares to improve his appearance and how both my mother and Bill would downplay our talents and have us experience life on our own. The scene in Edward Scissorhands where Edward told Bill, Peg, Kim, and Kevin the events of the beauty shop and the reaction for Peg was shocking and Bill downplayed the subject (Burton). My mother would over react like Peg that I was too young to reach the rank of Eagle, and my father similar Bill just downplaying the subject. I would allow myself to reach the rank of Eagle at the age of fourteen and see my brother never accomplish the same goal I did.

The talent of someone can be praised by all or hated by all. Edward and I expressed both our talent by people who though they need best and wanted to be involved with our actions daily. My mother’s fears would come true as I attempted to case a career in the military with the hoping of an acceptance letter from a military academy and my father would hope that my dream came true. Edward had to learn how to handle the people’s reaction of his talents and I had to learn how to overcome opinions for my talents. Life gives the opportunity to learn what talents humans can improve and make into a craftsmanship. Edward was able to create art in which was taken advantage of by his society and I was able to learn leadership skill that would allow me to understand what difficult work it takes to overcome physical, mental, and economic challenges that I faced within my youth. My parents argument allowed me not to pick aside between parent, but allowed me to understand a decision on make of which I would want to be reminder by start at the talent I want to improve on.
