In every industry or career path, there will always be people that are either overpaid or underpaid. Today I will be talking to you about why athletes are overpaid. I will first talk about if athletes really are overpaid, then I will talk about the top five most paid professional athletes, lastly I will explain if athletes really do deserve being paid that much for what they do. Transition: Now for my first main point, are athletes really overpaid. Main point #1 when we ask the question, “are professional athletes overpaid? ” it requires us to focus on the industry of professional sports as a whole.
The minimum salary of major league athletes ranges from $100,000-$300,000 per year. In the NBA, the average salary is in the ballpark of $5,000,000 a year according to overpaidathletes. net. In my opinion it is a lot just for playing a sport. Professional athletes are making too much money in a society where salaries and wages are traditionally based on the value of one’s work.
In today’s society, one should be paid according to the job’s economic importance and their value to society. Even our president Barack Obama only makes 400,000 dollars a year compared to tiger woods who makes 110 million dollars a year.
Transition: Next are the top 5 most paid athletes today Main Point #2 Number five is Phil Mickelson earning an estimated 40 million according to Craig Masterson from the bleacher report. com. Number 4 is Lebron James from the Miami heat earning 41 million dollars a year. Number 3 is David Beckham who gets paid an 44 million dollars a year and much more through endorsements such as adidas and gillete. Number 2 is Kobe Bryant who gets paid 47 million dollars a year and number one is Tiger Woods who gets 110 million dollars a year.
Although many people enjoy sports as I do I personally think that they are given too much for what they do when that money could go somewhere else and help our economy. When you consider the fact that a trained neurosurgeon will make at most $700k in a year after more than 10 rigorous years in school, you start to see the bigger picture. With salaries like these, it’s easy to see why the gap between the rich and the poor gets wider and wider. As much as we might try and argue that you cannot put a price tag on talent, a line has to be drawn between what is acceptable and what is not.
Transition: Now I will talk about if athletes really do deserve to get paid that much Main Point # 3 Some people believe that financial rewards should come depending on how hard you have worked to achieve it. Many look at professional athletes as lucky people who happen to be talented at shooting, throwing, or hitting a ball. On the other hand, normal folks have to labor themselves through college, work for their tuition, and have a career as a doctor, engineer, or a banker if they want to earn a fraction of what these overpaid professional athletes get.
In my opinion athletes have the easy life of making 1 million dollars a game. According to this or that. com. As professional athletes continue to receive larger and larger paychecks, the results have shown that teams should not give out so much money. So many ordinary people are struggling day in and day out. Athletes’ salaries make the situations that ordinary people are in seem worse. The athletes in the news don’t ever have to worry about their finances. Even though the situation most likely will not change anytime soon, it has become clear that a change needs to be made.
Transition: Now in conclusion Today I talked about if athletes really are overpaid, then I talked about the top five most paid professional athletes, and lastly I explained if athletes really do deserve being paid that much for what they do. In my opinion with salaries that professional athletes make, it’s easy to see why the gap between the rich and the poor gets wider and wider. As much as we might try and argue that you cannot put a price tag on talent, a line has to be drawn between what is acceptable and what is not.
