Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a popular festival celebrated in India with great enthusiasm. One of the traditions associated with Diwali is the practice of bursting firecrackers. The term “firecrackers” itself evokes feelings of joy and excitement. The mesmerizing display of colorful showers and sparkles illuminating the sky fills us with a sense of thrill and enthusiasm.
However, it is important to acknowledge the adverse effects and disadvantages that these fireworks have on our environment. It is the responsibility of every individual to take care of the environment, as well as our fellow humans and other living creatures. You may question why this responsibility matters and how it can be fulfilled.
You may be having a wonderful time celebrating and enjoying, setting off those lively fireworks. However, it may not be the same for those around you! Consider your neighbors. They may be ill or have important commitments the following day. They could also be studying for a test or exam and require some rest. Igniting firecrackers late at night during inconvenient hours disrupts the entire community, disturbs their sleep, and decreases their focus for the next day.
Firecrackers generate a significantly loud noise and vibrations that can travel long distances, often exceeding 140 decibels, which is beyond the maximum threshold of 85 decibels tolerable by the human ear. This leads to hearing impairment and permanent damage. Additionally, burning firecrackers releases numerous tiny toxic particles that can easily enter our lungs and harm the respiratory system. The smoke produced by firecrackers consists of sulfur compounds, heavy metals, other harmful chemicals, as well as poisonous gases like sulfur dioxide and ozone. Consequently, individuals with asthma, multiple chemical sensitivity, and other respiratory problems experience severe negative effects from these hazardous emissions.
Understanding the consequences and future threat of crackers is crucial. Governments must take this issue seriously by implementing the following measures:
• Prohibiting cracker production
• Enforcing laws on their production, sales, use, and advertisement
• Promoting refraining from using crackers among the general public
Global warming and pollution have multiple causes, but unlike other necessary sources, crackers only contribute waste. To make a difference, use your intellect, be civilized, utilize your knowledge, disregard others’ opinions or society, and AVOID USING CRACKERS.
This Diwali, we should all promise to reject firecrackers and instead, invest in a more secure and environmentally friendly future. Diwali symbolizes the festival of lights, where we should illuminate our lives with happiness and kindness. It is a time to let go of past conflicts and focus on a future that is brighter and more joyful.
