Fermium-525 was discovered in 1952 in the debris field of a H bomb detonation in the Pacific Ocean. It was discovered by Ghiorso and colleagues and is the eight discovered transuranium component of the actinide series. The longest lived Fm isotope lived a half life of 82 yearss.

Fermium ( after Enrico Fermi ) was foremost discovered by a squad led by Albert Ghiorso in 1952. The squad found 255Fm in the dust of the first H bomb detonation. That isotope was created when 238U combined with 17 neutrons in the intense temperature and force per unit area of the detonation ( eight beta decays besides occurred to make the component ) .
