Her sister, Margot, was three years her senior.The Franks were liberal Jews, and did not observe all of the customs and traditions of Judaism. They celebrated Christmas and Easter, and attended synagogue on occasion.The family had a comfortable life in Frankfurt, but after Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power in Germany in 1933, life changed dramatically for German Jews. The Franks began to feel the effects of anti-Semitism, and soon realized they would have to leave Germany if they wanted to stay alive.In 1934, the Franks moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. They felt safe there, and thought they would be able to avoid the Nazis.However, the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in 1940, and life became very difficult for the Franks. Jews were not allowed to go to school, hold jobs, or own businesses. They were forced to wear yellow stars and were eventually ghettoized, or forced to live in a specific area.In 1942, the Nazis began deporting Jews from the Netherlands to concentration and extermination camps in Eastern Europe. The Frank family went into hiding in an apartment that had been converted into a hidden annex.For two years, the Franks and four other people lived in the annex, hiding from the Nazis. They were helped by Otto Frank’s employees, Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl, and a family friend, Jan Gies.The group was discovered by the Nazis in 1944, and were all deported to concentration camps. Anne and Margot were sent to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they both died of typhus in 1945.Otto Frank was the only member of the group to survive the war. He returned to Amsterdam, where he was given Anne’s diary by Miep Gies. The diary, which Anne had written while in hiding, was published in 1947 under the title The Diary of a Young Girl.The book has been translated into over 60 languages and has become one of the most famous and well-known books about the Holocaust.
