Their lives and philosophies? Religion played a critical role in Puritan life. They felt that they were chosen by God for a special purpose and they believed that God was omnipotent and actually to be feared. Every Puritan civilian was expected to attend meetings on the Sabbath without opposition and religious discipline was to be demonstrated via reading verses of the Bible. To object to reading the Bible was treason (and made others believe that you were a Satanist). All of the good had to be cooked and clothes were o be ready in advance (Puritans stressed simplicity, so they wore simple clothes).
No labor, not even sewing, could be done on the Sabbath. The Sabbath began at sundown the night before, and the evening was spent in prayer and Bible study. Treatment of women and children? – The Puritans, like many societies in this time period, believed that women were culturally inferior to men. They weren’t allowed to vote, buy or sell land or sue in a court of law.
They were also coerced into following the edicts of their husbands. Weren’t allowed to divorce either.
