Warmth of connection, elegance and beauty, passion, support and sacrifice. These are all vital elements needed for love. This anthology of poems is about the theme loving relationships. These poems allow the reader to explore the ways in which each relationship has a different overall emotion. From the thrill and passion described in “Electric Love” by Denis Glover to the overwhelming care and nurturing in “Bridge over troubled water” by Paul Simon. Readers gain an enhanced perspective of how strong bonds between one another are dominated by an overall different love.
This is demonstrated in the poem ‘Tidal Wave’ by Stacy Lynn Stiles. This poem shows a mothers affectionate care and love towards raising her daughter and that she is proud of the girl that she has become. A measure of the mothers’ compassion towards her daughter is exemplified in the quote “While I held you close to me singing your favourite rhyme … Lips pressed upon sweet innocence your cries I did console”. This blend of peaceful, passionate imagery and rich metaphor conveys the degree of love the mother feels for her child. The ‘Lips pressed upon sweet innocence your cries I did console’ evokes a sense of the mothers care and affection that no one could break between them.
Similarly “These crashing violent riptides will soon turn a peaceful wave. Knowing the life I gave you, is the life in me which you did save” reveals how gratified and thankful she is. The exquisite connotative language ‘crashing violent riptides will soon turn a peaceful wave’ demonstrates that all the hard work the mother put in is over, ‘Knowing the life I gave you, is the life in me which you did save’ shows that it has all paid off. Overall the mother has a sublime amount of love for her child and is devoted and extremely proud of her daughter.
The poem “Tonight the phone” by Lisa Freinkel is a valued poem because it clearly describes the romance and passion in a loving relationship between teenagers particularly when they talk on the phone.This is demonstrated in stanza 1 where it states “Tonight the phone is warm and you come soft to me and brush me with your voice”. The combination of powerful imagery and excellent metaphors evokes the sense of affection and intense love and care for each other. ‘And you come soft to me and brush me with your voice.’ shows that he is ecstatic to hear her voice and that it is comforting and elegant also that he seems at ease when she talks. This is also conveyed in stanza 3 “In the wet air there is a rainbow and tonight I listen to the touch of you.”
This powerful visual language and vivid metaphor shows the loving relationship they have with each other. “In the wet air there is a rainbow” implies that whenever he has a problem or is unhappy she is always there to ease his mind and talk to. Also “tonight I listen to the touch of you” evokes a sense that even though they are talking on the phone the relationship is so strong that they don’t need to be near each other to have a very strong loving bond. In conclusion the emotive language used in the text truly evokes the romance and passion in a loving relationship.
Care and support are demonstrated in the poem “Bridge over troubled water” by Paul Simon. This poem describes the nurturing relationship between a father and a daughter and how he will always be there for her to take care of her. This is showed in “When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all… Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down. Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down.” This mixture of rich imagery and eloquent similes represents the care and affection that he feels for his child. The ‘When tears are in your eyes I will dry them all’ represents the fathers fondness of his daughter and the degree of care and support he gives to her.
Also the repetitiveness of ‘Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down’ in each stanza reminds her that he is always there to take care of her and will sacrifice himself to keep her safe and happy. This is also shown in the quote “Sail on silvergirl sail on by your time has come to shine… if you need a friend I’m sailing right behind”. The “sail on silvergirl sail on by” reveals that his time of taking care of her is over, however “if you need a friend I’m sailing right behind” portrays that he will always be there for her to protect her. Therefore the father wants to keep hold of the loving relationship between him and his daughter and do whatever it takes to keep her safe and happy.
Thrill, excitement and happiness are demonstrated in the poem “Electric Love” by Denis Glover and also the spark between a man and a woman. This is portrayed in “Oh yes my loves a dynamo, who charges all the air; my love is an Electrolux” The mixture of vibrant, joyful metaphors demonstrates the excitement and liveliness that they have in the relationship. The quote “my love is a dynamo who charges all the air” implies that his love is captivating and full of energy and whenever he sees her there is a spark which seems to arouse him. Also “My love is an Electrolux” represents that his love lights up his life and brightens his day. This is also conveyed in “Hers is the current keeping bright. My filament of being”.
This combination of stimulating metaphors exemplifies the strong love in the relationship. “My filament of being” shows that his love is keeping him alive and that they need each other to be happy and to have that warm loving connection. Overall all poems have vital elements needed for love and are different types of love whether it’s a passionate, romantic love or a caring, protective love for one another. All poems convey the message through the evocative eloquent language techniques used.

My love is like a dynamo
With woven wire for hair
And when she brushes it at night
The sparks run crackling there.
Oh se is the magnetic field
In which I pass my days,
And she will always be to me
Electric in her ways
No insulated force is she;

Tidal Wave
A tidal wave of emotions,
have sent my soul out to sea.
Crashing currents submersing,
what once was you and me.
Drifting afar distantly,
a glimpse of precious time.
While I held you close to me,
singing your favourite rhyme.
Rocking gently back and forth,
arms encircling you whole.
Lips pressed upon sweet innocence,
your cries I did console.
Praying the Lord may keep you;
wash your troubles away.
Hoping a bond forever remains,
the same tomorrow as today.
Splashing scents of adorable purity;
upon your mother’s face.
I draw you closer, your tiny being;
and even tighter I embrace.
A riptide of adornment drowns;
a tidal wave within my soul.
I once was broken and severed,
but now am completely whole.
Consumed with pure admiration,
at the woman you’ve become.
Beautiful imperfections,
your absence chastised me numb.
Although I know you had to,
spread those vast angelic wings.
I still can hear the laughter,
of a child’s heart that proudly sings.
These crashing, violent riptides;
will soon turn a peaceful wave.
Knowing the life I gave you,
is the life in me which you did save.
This current of my heart, is perfectly;
in synch with every beat.
A perfect bond between us;
without your love, I’m incomplete.
