Evidence: There was also a study done in 2006 at Stanford University that proved that about 6% of women and 5. 5% of men are compulsive buyers. This mental disorder has not been studied extensively but it is thought to be an impulse control disorder.

Evidence: April Lane Benson she is a New York psychologist and author of the book: “To Buy or Not to buy” Well she estimates that between one third and a half of compulsive buyers will eventually turn into hoarders, but some will just buy a lot of item and get rid of the old ones. So you might ask “Where does compulsive shopping come from? ” : 1. ) Well sometimes people acquire objects as a way of dealing with chaos and feeling out of control, BENSON stated: “ You buy something, you’re in control of it”. 2. It can also be related to their childhood: Parents may have given presents instead of time and attention leading a child to grow up wanting to get more material possessions. 3. ) Another reason or cause is that people may have grown up with a lot of emotional or financial deprivation, and when they are able to afford a lot of shopping they over buy as a way of not going back to the way things were. Forrest also states that compulsive shopping sometimes goes hand in hand with alcoholism and eating disorders.

Psychologists usually view it as an issue of impulsive control rather than a sign of obsessive compulsive disorders. Therefore OCD medications will not work for shopping problems. Having this disorder can have an effect on your relationships especially if that’s the only way you can cope with your stress. Because of this disorder usually a majority of the arguments with their spouses will be over money and not being able to afford basic necessities and Elizabeth Deiter can relate to this. When I’m upset it happens more often I get into an argument with my husband or my day is not going right, I definitely spend more” Elizabeth also says how her husband asked her about the other $400 that were in the bank and She honestly doesn’t remember spending it. So because of her behavior it has gotten to the point that her husband has threaten to end their marriage. Four solutions that this article had: 1. )

Take someone to go shopping with you and act as ur check, so you don’t overspend. 2. The majority of the time try to pay in cash this will help control how much you are spending 3. ) Wait about 24 hours before buying something you really don’t need. 4. ) Use sources of online support groups such as blogs ( DEBATORS ANONYMOUS) Of course some of these solutions may work for some people but not help all. Argument being presented: Shopping addicts are especially vulnerable during the holidays when the pressure to buy is increased. Criticsm: I liked the article because it was different and it is a situation that happens in real life.

It was also easy to understand the article as well as relating to it. How well the author presented the argument: The author presented well the argument because she used statistics and information from the psychologist which are reliable sources. What could have been improved: It would have been more interesting if the author would have added the perspective from the women’s husband to see how he copes with her shopping addiction problem. So another side of the situation would have been great. Other than that the article was fine.
