Everyone experiences loneliness in some part of their life and cope with it in many different ways; agreed John Cacioppo, Aubrey Hammack, and Hara Estroff Marano. Each of these writers wrote articles about the battles people face when dealing with loneliness, and how it affects your health. Hammack and Marano’s articles are similar to the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. They reveal how many people can function and go on with their lives easier when they have friends and family that will be there for them no matter what.
Even though George and Lennie weren’t family they still had each other and weren’t lonely like Curley’s wife.
Many people who are dealing with loneliness don’t know how it affects them. Cacioppo states how loneliness can be bad for your health in many different ways. Not having close friends or any social contact with people you are close to do bring up emotional discomfort is known as loneliness.
This is what many of the workers were dealing with in the story, Of Mice and Men. As George mentioned, “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. ” Marano verifies her research on loneliness through people’s health. She adds that awareness of loneliness appears through the brain and makes us sad.
Curley’s wife experiences this in the book because her husband makes her stay in the house all day by herself. When she is feeling lonely she goes to a handyman on the ranch to talk to them. None of the handymen give her comfort or communicate back to her because they know that Curley will get mad, the men don’t want to give Curley trouble because he is the boss’s son. Social needs affect your health; it clogs your arteries and even affects your memory. John Cacioppo states that one of the best guarantees to living a long healthy life is the connections you have with the others.
Social isolation has a definite impact in health. It can lead to high blood pressure, smoking, and lack of exercise. This experiment shows up in measurements of immune function, cardiovascular function, and stress hormones. One of the things you shouldn’t do is surround yourselves with people. That’s because loneliness isn’t essentially a result of being alone. If you’re moving out of your house and going to live somewhere else, and you’re going to a different school for the first time. You can be around a lot of people but still feel utterly cut off.
It’s also like being a migrant worker and having to move all the time because of crop season. Migrant workers face loneliness too, just like George and Lennie, two of the characters in Of Mice and Men. Every time Lennie acts out George takes the fall too. They have to go find another ranch and try to fit in all over again. Migrant workers experience that by having to move to different parts of the country or the state they work in just because of the crop seasons. They have to follow their crops because that’s all they know and have to get paid and survive somehow.
Imagine moving to a different school every couple of months. It would seem like Migrant workers really wouldn’t care because they are specifically there to tend the crops, but they also have to have connections with others to feel good. All of the writers of these articles explain different things about loneliness and if you read the book Of Mice and Men you can understand how hard and important it is to not be lonely. If you haven’t read the book, I suggest you should it will give you a great understanding about loneliness.
