Other characters become associated with their rarity problems, showing different kinds of love and relationships. In the play Hamlet, the reader also experiences many different kinds Of love, ranging from lost love to superficial love. The relationships between Hamlet and Aphelia, and Claudia and Gertrude all create conflict which inevitably leads to tragedy. Many characters become involved with the relationships between Aphelia and Hamlet and Claudia and Gertrude which also leads to tragedy for many Of those characters also.
In both works Of literature, pressures of people and society have corrupted the love that the characters let for themselves and others, which lead to tragic endings. In the novel The Great Gatsby, the relationship between the different characters eventually disintegrated because of unreal love and the struggle for wealth. The most controversial relationship in the novel is the relationship between Daisy and Tom. Infidelity in their marriage has caused problems not only for themselves, but for other characters also.
Tom and Daisy relationship seems to be normal and healthy at the beginning. They are a wealthy couple living in East Egg, one of the most powerful and wealthy immunities in New York. Tom is a friend of Nicks from when they went to Yale, and Daisy is Nicks cousin. Nick soon discovers that Tom and Daisy relationship is not all bliss. Tom and Nick go to New York City where they meet Toms Mistress Myrtle, and go have a party at Toms apartment. Toms true colors show, because of his dominance over Myrtle. When Myrtle taunts Tom by mentioning Daisy name, Tom hits her, and breaks her nose.
Toms relationship with Myrtle appears to be fuelled by his sexual needs and his need to have extreme power, not for love. Tom and Myrtles affair affects Myrtles relationship with her husband George Wilson, who genuinely loves and cares for his wife. Myrtles husband is not as wealthy as Tom, and it seems as though Myrtle began a relationship with Tom to live in the overindulgent life that Tom lives. George genuinely loved Myrtle, so she was not searching for love. We learn in chapter IV that before Daisy and Tom got married, Daisy was in a relationship with Gatsby.
She had promised Gatsby that she would wait for him until he came back from war. Daisy has a need to be loved, so she decided to marry Tom, who was wealthy and powerful. Jordan tells Nick this, and she also tells Nick that Gatsby is still in love with Daisy. In chapter V, Gatsby than asks Nick if he can have both him and Daisy for tea, so that he can see her again. Nick agrees, and the two meet. After they meet and are alone for a while, they seem to be smitten with each other. Daisy seems to be looking for love because she is aware Of her husbands infidelities.
Gatsby seems to be looking to realize his dream of having a relationship with Daisy again. It is no surprise that the characters are looking for superficial love and wealth. This book was set in the 1 sass which were now as the roaring twenties. This decade is described as one of the most colorful decades in American history because of a large industrial boom, which drastically improved the lifestyles of many Americans. 1 The reader can also experience the lifestyle that the characters lived through the description of the neighborhood.
I lived at West Egg, the well, the less fashionTABLE of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them. Page 10 2 In Hamlet, there is also unreal love and wealth, and also power that affects relationships. Both pieces of literature express the same theme of love and corruption. In the play Hamlet, the relationships between the different characters were destroyed because of Hamlets frustrations and other characters suspicions. Hamlet and Aphelia once had a very passionate love affair.
Aphelia father Polonium and brother Alerter did not agree with their relationship. Alerter told Aphelia that she could not have a relationship with Hamlet because For Hamlet and the trifling Of his favor, Hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, A violet in the youth of primp nature, Forward, not permanent, sweet, not casting, The perfume and suppliants of a minute; No more. Act I scene Ill 3 Alerter is implying that Hamlet is not the right age for her, and he is comparing Hamlets love of Aphelia to the violet, which flowers early in the spring, but doesn’t live long.
If it were not for Polonium and Alertest influence on Aphelia, and Aphelia willingness to go along with everything her father and brother tell her to do, many tragedies could have been avoided such as Hamlets insanity, and the death of most of the main characters. The relationship between Gertrude and Claudia caused many problems. Gertrude husband King Hamlet was killed, and the reader learns that it was Claudia that killed King Hamlet in act I scene V. Two months later, Claudia and Gertrude married, and Hamlet was not happy.
The marriage between Claudia and Gertrude affected the relationship with Hamlet and his mother. Claudia suspected that Hamlet was insane, so he asked different characters to spy on Hamlet. Gertrude followed every opinion that Claudia had. Because of Claudia, Gertrude and Hamlets relationship was strained. During the time of Elizabethan theatre, plays about tragedy and revenge were very moon and a regular convention seemed to be formed on what aspects should be put into a typical revenge tragedy. 4 This shows why Shakespeare based Hamlets frustrations on revenge.
By relationships being destroyed by frustrations and suspicions, the outcomes of both pieces of literature were affected negatively. In both pieces Of literature, the complacent behavior Of the characters in love and relationships resulted in tragic endings. In The Great Gatsby, Daisy relationship with Gatsby killed Myrtle. As they were driving back in Gatsby car, they hit Myrtle, and she dies. When Nick goes back to fine them, Gatsby is hiding in the bushes afraid that Tom will go and look for him. By Gatsby hiding in the bushes, it indicates that he and Daisy knew that they were going to hit Myrtle.
After George talks to Michaels who is the owner of a restaurant and witnessed the accident, he comes to the conclusion that it is Gatsby that killed Myrtle. George goes to Gatsby house and finds him in his pool, than fatally shoots Gatsby and commits suicide. In Hamlet, Polonium is killed because Hamlet thought that Polonium was King Claudia. Aphelia becomes insane because of her fathers death and drowns herself. When Alerter comes back from France, he wants to seek revenge on Hamlet for his fathers death, so they have a duel.
During the duel Hamlet strikes Alerter twice, and Gertrude drinks on Hamlets behalf not knowing that the drink is poisonous, and she eventually dies. Alerter strikes Hamlet once and Hamlet strikes Alerter with his own sword. Alerter claims that his sword is poisoned and they will both die. Hamlets than forces Claudia to drink the rest of the poisoned wine, and the three Of them die. The deaths in both pieces Of iterate were caused because Of characters were selfish and wanted to keep their relationships despite the obvious conflicts.
Because of the relationships that the characters created with each other, there were many deaths that could have been avoided. In both works of literature, pressures of people and society have corrupted the love that the characters felt for themselves and others, which lead to tragic endings. In The Great Gatsby, the pressures of being wealthy and powerful have influenced the relationships between the characters. In Hamlet, the pressures Of Hamlets insanity and different characters suspicions dead to tragic endings.
