Summary

In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne is depicted as a woman of natural dignity and force of character. During the first scaffold scene, she shows remarkable poise under scrutiny and repeatedly denies her husband and lover the satisfaction of knowing her fellow sinner. Her might is also evident in the forest scene where she is acknowledged by Reverend Arthur Timescale to have the strength he lacks. Hester’s beauty is not only physical but also comes from her honesty and strength to openly acknowledge her sin. Although her beauty is clouded by the scarlet letter she wears, it gains her respect in Puritan society through time. Hester’s honesty eventually gains her admiration from the townspeople who increasingly react her into society. In the end, Hester lives on quietly and becomes something of a legend in the loony, sharing her compassion and giving strength to all that remember her. Although her physical beauty and social status alter greatly for the good and bad, her honesty, compassion, and strength are more than enough to relieve her soul.
