Serena Williams is a six time US Opener Grand Slam champion. Not only has Serena been playing tennis for some time, but she knows exactly what she is doing, and she knows the wrong from right, she is an expert in tennis, The Serena Williams incident was not a case of racism with the umpire, it was sexism.
Carlos Ramos knew exactly what he was doing, and he proved to many with his actions that he showed sexism. Ramos showed sexism by many factors for instance, men that have admitted to doing the same or even worse to Ramons nothing has happened, men think that that they are superior to women, and he was getting on her because of her outfit.
Many men have come to the table saying they have done if not what William’s did, but worse than what she did and they did not get any trouble for it. Ramos showed his true colors during that match. John McEnroe stated, “I’ve said far worse… she’s right about the guys being held to a different standard, there’s no question.” McEnroe is a seven time Grand Slam single winner, and he has faced time like Williams had with the umpire. Although, McEnroe has done far worse, and he has never been targeted; he absolutely did not have a game taken from him either.
Ramos took it to offense that Williams had her issues, and he was not going to let her slide. It is normal for a man to have the power and rage to break a tennis racket, but once a women does it, it is a shock to people. Williams did it out of rage, she was upset and angry. It is not likely for women to do that, and that is where women are downgraded from men. It is normal for men to do that so they would not be penalized for it, meanwhile women do get penalized for it because it is not likely of them.
Throughout time, men have always seem to feel as if they are superior to women. This has always been the case around the world. Ramos showed that he does not want any girl to show more power than him, or to overrule on him. In this case, Ramos did what he thought would be the right thing. By showing everyone that he is the man, and he holds the power as being the umpire. His power was to take Serena Williams game from her.
He was able to make her lose that match. Ramos basically stole from Williams and her tennis career, because he did not want to be seen in the wrong. Women have always been held to a different standard than men. Elizabeth Banks, an actress stated, ‘The amount of control men feel the need to exert over women is petty-level with this one. Serena Williams is the GOAT. The game respects HER.’ In this case, women are always seen to be innocent and the men can possibly get away with what they please.
The one time Ramos sees that William’s is right, and as she demanded for an apology he knew he had the power to do what he did. He continued to egg her on, causing more tension for herself. He got under her skin and got her more upset than she already was. It was not fair how he can get away with his actions meanwhile, she flips out for being egged on and she has to take all the blame for it.
William’s was targeted previously for how she dressed. She wore a catsuit, black jumpsuit that helped her blood to circulate better, this was due to a health issue. President Bernard Giudicelli, the French Tennis Federation President stated “…late last month that he will be introducing a new dress code that would ban players from wearing such form-fitting clothes at the tennis tournament…One must respect the game and the place.’
Because Williams had her own health issues with the birthing of her child, she worse this suit to please herself and her body. She did not purposely wear it to please anyone else or to make her body look good. After being told about the dress code changes, Williams took full control and she did not cause any problems. She understood, and bought a new five hundred dollar tennis dress. Williams was fully cooperative about it, even though they targeted her for wearing the catsuit.
Although there are many scenarios where each of the sides can be understood. There is no actual evidence to which side is the truth. There will always be people with different opinions on it. Everyone will have their own sense to put into it, but that does not prove either side. Many may believe it was sexism, and others sided with Ramos and believe it was not sexism or racism, and simply believe he was just doing his job. Both sides can be pointed very well, although there are plenty of statements to show that it was more of sexism rather than racism.
Throughout the match Ramos did what he had the power to do. He manipulated her, and took his anger out on her. Giving her penalties, and continue to charge her with little stuff, eventually taking a game from her. Also causing her to be fined, seventeen thousand dollars. Ramos does not deserve to be an umpire any longer. He showed his true colors with sexism. He showed that he has the power to do as he pleases, and of course he will get away with it.
