Apparently, in most cases, the earliest teachers people have are their parents. Parents are normally most concerned about the development of their children. However, it is not exactly true to say that parents are the best teacher.
First of all, not all parents are good teachers. As normal individuals, some parents more or less have some bad habits. Although parents almost instinctively devote themselves to cultivating their offspring, the result might turn out to be a disappointment.
Parents have a significant influence on their children, and often without realizing it, children tend to copy both good and bad habits from their parents. However, many parents lack common sense when it comes to education. Some parents force their children to follow a predetermined path in pursuit of their own failed dreams. When the children do not comply with these expectations, they are labeled as disobedient or rebellious. In reality, it is the parents who are disobeying common sense.
Moreover, some parents are qualified as good teachers, but not all of them are the best ones. We live in a world where knowledge is accumulated by multiplying and at the same time becomes more and more specialized. Therefore, to be a professional in a certain field today takes much longer time than ever before. No parent is able to be professional in all fields, though they might be experts in one or more fields. Wise parents often release their children rather than charge them as early as possible because they are aware of the possibilities outside the family.
Parents can actually help their children more than good teachers can. Many aspects of a child’s education are beyond the teacher’s control, and parents play a vital role in supplementing it. Studies in psychology have shown that the involvement of parents has a positive impact on their children’s development. However, it is worth noting that parents can also harm their children more than bad teachers if they are not careful. Children whose parents have gone through divorce often suffer from distorted personalities. Therefore, it is superficial to claim that parents are always the best teachers.
