Comparison of music

Introduction

Music genre is a categorical and typological construct that identifies musical sounds as belonging to a particular category and type of music that can be distinguished from other types of music (Moy, 2004). Music can be divided in different ways and at the same time this music has different genres which can be divided in many different ways. Due to the different purposes behind them and the different points of view from which they are made, these classifications are often arbitrary and controversial and closely related genres often overlap (Longhurst, 2007). Many people do not believe that generic classification of musical genres is possible in any logically consistent way and tends to think that doing that sets limitation and boundaries that acts as a barrier to music development. There is no doubt that it is easier to note the similarities between musical pieces where there are exceptions and caveats associated (Moy, 2004).

Discussion

There are different types of genres of which some have differences and similarities

The firs example is lied commonly referred to as lieder in plural. The rise of lied was fueled by the outpouring of lyric poetry that marked the German romantism. The text of lied, range from tender sentiment to dramatic balladry. The universal themes of this genre are love, longing and the beauty of nature. The genre made the romantic art popular especially when accompanied by piano which was the available instrument of the nineteenth century (Moy, 2004). The accompaniment of piano to a song translated its poet images into music. The combination of voice and piano infused the short lyric form with feeling and made it suitable for amateur and artist like in home and concert hall.

The other genre is orchestration where composers were provided with palettes which were broad as those of painters. These palettes were used to create mood and atmosphere at the same time evoke profound emotional responses. After this development it was not easy to direct an orchestra from the keyboard or the first violin desk, as had been the tradition in the eighteen century and therefore became the central figure where the conductor was needed to conduct the choir (Munste & Nils, 2001). It brings literature closer into painting. There is a connection with romantic poetry and drama where the music has words. Orchestral music respond responds to music of time and captures vividly the emotional atmosphere that surrounded nineteenth century poetry and painting (Moy, 2004).

There is also the piano piece which assisted in shaping the musical culture of romantic era. The genre seems to be attractive to amateurs because unlike wind and string instruments, melody and harmony could be performed on one instrument at once (Munste & Nils, 2001). There is one which was common known as four hand piano music, which is a chamber music form for two performers at one piano or at times two.  Many workers were arranged in this genre which gave room for salon and home performances of orchestral and large ensemble music. Therefore the piano played a crucial role in the taste and experience of new mass public. The short lyric piano gave the equivalent of a song.

Conclusion

The piano piece was used for shaping the musical culture of romantic era while the orchestration used composers who were provided with palettes that created mood and evoked profound emotional responses. On the other hand lied was used to create love, longing and the beauty of nature.
