information | Short biography of Anne BradstreetessayAnne Bradstreet was born in Northampton, England on September 16, 1612 to Thomas Dudley and Dorothy Yorke Dudley. (Her maiden name was Bradstreet.) She was the oldest of eight children, and was educated at home. She married Simon Bradstreet at the age of sixteen, and they emigrated to Massachusetts in 1630. Anne Bradstreet was the first female poet to be published in the American colonies. Her first book of poetry, The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America, was published in London in 1650, without her knowledge or permission. It was well-received in England, but caused a scandal in the Puritan community in Massachusetts. Anne Bradstreet continued to write poetry throughout her life, and her second book, Several Poems Compiled with Good Advice, was published in Boston in 1678.
