Facing many hardships, these women had tough lives. Phillis was a slave; she was brought to America on a slave ship when she was about eight.However, Phillis’ life did get easier when a Boston family purchased her and taught her to read and write. Later on her life did get tougher when three of her children died of infancy and her husband was imprisoned.

Anne also had many hardships: raise eight children and suffered multiple illnesses. Both girls wrote out of their joy of writing also. Anne and Phillis both had their poems published. The writing styles in these poems are different also.

In To My Dear and Loving Husband the writing style used is The Puritan Plain Style.The Puritan Plain Style is characterized by short words, direct statements, and references to everyday objects and experiences. The poem To His Excellency, General Washington is written in heroic couplets. That is a traditional poetic form structure.

One way that the poems are similar is that both poets express their feelings in their writings. Thirdly, To My Dear and Loving Husband is about one-half the size of To His Excellency, General Washington in length. Another difference is that Anne and Phillis both wrote about different things. Anne wrote about love.

She says, “I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold. Living without love seems impossible to Anne and she prays that she will live in love.On the other hand, Phillis writes about America. Also, she writes about the Revolutionary conflict.
