His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel changed his name to Hawthorne in an attempt to distance himself from his family’s shameful involvement in the trials.Hawthorne’s father died when Nathaniel was only four years old, and he was raised by his mother and two uncles. Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College, where he befriended future president Franklin Pierce. After graduation, Hawthorne worked various jobs, including surveyor, customs inspector, and writer.In 1836, Hawthorne published his first book, Fanshawe, though it was not a success. Hawthorne married Sophia Peabody in 1842, and the couple had three children.Hawthorne’s most famous work, The Scarlet Letter, was published in 1850 and was immediately successful. The novel tells the story of Hester Prynne, a woman who has an affair and is forced to wear a scarlet “A” on her dress as punishment. The novel explores themes of sin, guilt, and redemption.Hawthorne’s other works include The House of the Seven Gables (1851), The Blithedale Romance (1852), and The Marble Faun (1860).
