Short biography of Robert Browning

Robert Browning (1812-1889) English poet, the son of a bank clerk, was born at Camberwell, a suburb of London, the capital city of England. He was educated at the University College London and in 1832 at Pisa, Italy. In 1835 he published Pauline, A Fragment of a Confession, which was later suppressed as being morbid and improper. In 1846 he published Sordello, generally considered one of his most beautiful poems.Browning married the poet Elizabeth Barrett in 1846, and they went to live in Italy. Their courtship is commemorated in a volume of love poems, Sonnets from the Portuguese (1850). Browning’s greatest work is the dramatic poem Men and Women (1855), in which he shows his mastery of the dramatic monologue form. In this volume are such poems as “My Last Duchess,” “Fra Lippo Lippi,” “Andrea del Sarto,” and “Caliban upon Setebos.” His use of monologue, in which a person reveals his innermost thoughts, is also found in The Ring and the Book (1868-1869), one of the longest poems in English. In this work, based on actual events, he shows his gift for character portrayal. He is also known for his shorter poems, such as “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” and “Home Thoughts from Abroad.”
