The Lady with the Dog is a novel written by Anton Chekhov. It was first published in 1899 as a book by “Vsemirnaya Literatura”, Moscow. The story takes place in Yalta, Crimea where Chekhov went to rest after completing his studies at the University of Tartu (which you might have heard about from its other famous student, Vladimir Nabokov).

The plot revolves around the lives of Anna Sergeyevna and her lover Aleksei Ivanovich. Anna is married to an old man named Andrey Petrovich Goryantchikov who works as an architect on the construction of a new railway line between Simferopol and Sevastopol (a real-life event which was occurring at the time). Aleksei is an engineer working on that same project, but he has already been separated from his wife for many years because she had an affair with another man who later became her husband. When Aleksei meets Anna, he falls in love with her immediately and asks her to run away with him to another city where they can begin their lives together again as husband and wife. Anna agrees to do so, but only on one condition: she wants him to divorce his wife first…
