information | Short summary on The Sound and the FuryThe Sound and the Fury is an American novel written by William Faulkner. It was published in 1929 and is his fourth major work. The book centers on a family that once had wealth and prestige in the town of Jefferson, Mississippi, but has since fallen into poverty and dissipation. The novel is narrated by four different points of view: Jason Compson III, who suffers from schizophrenia; Caddy Compson, with whom he shares a love/hate relationship; Quentin Compson, his older brother who has committed suicide at the start of the novel; and Benjy Compson, Jason’s younger brother who is mentally disabled. The novel is set in two time periods: 1910-1916 and 1928-1929. The fragmented structure of the novel reflects the fractured mental state of its protagonists. As such, it is often considered the author’s most experimental work. The book is narrated by four different characters: Benji Compson, an idiot with a childish point of view; Quentin Compson, a Harvard student who committed suicide after his girlfriend had an abortion; Jason Compson II, cynical businessman; and Dilsey Gibson, a black maid who works for the Compsons.
