What Is an Argumentative Essay?
An argumentative essay is a piece of writing in which the author takes a position on a topic. A writer strives to persuade readers to understand and support their point of view on a topic in a good argumentative essay by presenting their reasoning and offering evidence to back it up.
Writing an argumentative essay is a regular task for high school and college students. Science, technology, politics, and health care are all common themes for argumentative essays.
Steps on Writing Your Argumentative Essay
Step 1 – Choosing A Topic
You must choose a suitable topic for an argumentative essay regardless of the form of argument you choose. A topic that can be debated passionately for or against is ideal for an argument essay. For example, if you want to write an essay about how much you love hamburgers, that isn’t a very excellent topic because there isn’t a strong counter-argument. If your teacher hasn’t offered you a topic yet, have a look at our selected selection of argumentative essay themes. Choose a topic about which you are knowledgeable and on which you already have an opinion. It will be easier to investigate and write as a result of this.
Step 2 – Research
Look for content from reputable sources and professionals (books, papers, blogs, films). Read widely and take notice of the most common points of contention on this subject. While it’s critical to discuss the most essential and pressing concerns in your essay, look for fresh perspectives that haven’t been adequately covered yet. Teachers would appreciate the fact that you went out of your way to incorporate something unique.
Step 3 – Write an Outline
When it comes to the writing process, a decent outline will come in handy. All you have to do now is fill it in if you take the time to compose a well-crafted one.
Give some background on your issue so the reader knows what you’re going to talk about in the introduction. In your introduction, try to answer any of these questions: why is this topic important? What impact does it have on me? Is there anything that can be done about it? If the topic is gun regulation, for example, you could include a statistic regarding the number of people killed by firearms in the United States each year or a comment from a parent who has lost a kid in a school shooting.
Your thesis statement, in which you take a position on the problem, should also be included in the introduction. For example, your thesis statement may be: Enacting tougher gun control legislation is the best approach to stop this trend.
Paragraph 2 of the supporting paragraphs – Provide a second argument to back up your thesis. For example, in X study, tougher gun legislation reduced firearm-related homicide by x%.
Defend your position with a counterargument. In this situation, restricting gun access may deprive innocent individuals of their right to protect themselves against violent criminals who may still be able to obtain guns illegally. You should also disprove the counterargument by enacting stronger rules prohibiting the sale of firearms to criminals and people with mental illnesses.
Step 4 – Fill In the Blanks
All you have to do now is fill in the blanks with important research facts if you did your job in the previous phase and prepared a well-developed plan. Consider which of the three tactics you’re employing: Classical, Rogerian, or Toulmin, and adjust your tone and reasoning accordingly.
Step 5 – Edit
Take a break once you’ve finished your essay before returning to modify it. When you’re ready to edit your argumentative essay, keep the following points in mind:
- Is your thesis a statement that could be defended or refuted?
- Are your arguments well-written?
- Have you backed up your claims with your best examples and research?
It is not difficult to write a successful argumentative essay. You may produce a fantastic essay by conducting research, selecting an argument style, creating a well-developed outline, and going through the editing checklist. Best of luck, and keep writing!
