The Art of Giving and Receiving Advice

Table of Content

Family provides advice and support, allowing individuals to make their own choices. My family has always prioritized these qualities. Let me introduce myself – my name is Kelvin, born and currently residing in Dayton, Ohio on February 9, 1982. Now, let’s move on to the main topic – discussing my perspectives on parenting based on how my parents raised me and the challenges they faced to achieve their version of excellence.

During my parents’ youth, they had five sons who were all good-looking. Although my mother had to give up her college education to care for us, my father persisted in his studies with the aim of improving our family’s circumstances. However, we encountered challenges due to my father’s poorly paid job, which prompted my mother to apply for food stamps. Every time we went shopping, it became an unpleasant ordeal as it seemed like my mom was using monopoly money to purchase groceries. I could always feel her embarrassment while utilizing those stamps at the store.

Despite the financial challenges we faced, my parents always stressed the significance of education and its role in achieving success. However, I am reluctant to become a parent without being financially prepared as it can be difficult to meet all needs and ensure children’s happiness with limited income. I appreciate that my father completed college and my mother finished her education. Regarding the kind of parent I hope to be, I will endeavor to embody the qualities and values demonstrated by my parents despite the obstacles we encountered during our upbringing.
