In the world we live in today many people live without knowing how things really used to be or how some people may look at certain situations. Movies sometimes help portray the way people feel about the way things used to be or maybe still be viewed today. For example, in the movie “The Help”, the maids get with a girl who begins writing a book about their stories working for white families. It is cruel how badly treated some of them were and really sad watching how the maids would get close to the little children as they pretty much raised them while their mother s went and did other things.
The group of maids that were shown throughout the movie portrayed how the families treated them and it was sad. If a maid were to embarrass the white rich lady then it was her place to let her go for she was disobeying their rules. It was such a disgrace watching how they treated the maids for they would go out their way to make sure things were the way they were supposed to be. It was also sad to see how the maids took care of their children more than they did. The big turnover in the movie is when a white family allowed the maid to sit down and eat with them as a sign of respect to the maid for all she had done for them.
The girl that discussed the stories with the maids never wrote the real names of the people they worked for, but the best part was when everyone went out to buy the books they could put two and two together of who that character was. Honestly I was glad to see the book was published to allow the maids stories to be told. This movie displayed how maids might have truly felt back in the day when dealing with rich white families, and I am so glad it is not like that today. For many things may seem racial, but nothing is like it was years ago.
Another movie that can sort of relate to this situation is “The Gridiron Gang”. This movie displayed young men going to jail of different race for different things. They each lived in different areas which had a gang depending upon what side of the street they lived on. The sad thing is people were stuck on so much hatred just because they lived on the wrong side of the street, but why? The police officers tried coming up with ways to try to make it where when they left the detention center they tried to stay clear of the gang life and being killed as soon as they got out.
The cops got the bright idea of trying to get them to be able to play football and of course it wasn’t an easy start. Many places didn’t like the idea of letting criminals play football because then it could possibly affect their football players. They finally found someone that was willing to give them a try at a chance of change. Many of the criminals had personal background like not having support or watching their mom being mistreated or seeing their cousin being killed by a gang member, but knowing that someone was willing to give them a chance at a new life soon gave them hope for change.
Not only the cops began to give them hope and help them believe that they were worth something, but as soon as they began to get close to the championship the people who never gave them the time of day because of the person they were actually began to come watch them play which meant a lot to them. They began to see that there is more to life then gangs and fighting. And honestly we are guilty of saying that all criminals are bad, but they aren’t.
