A Confirmation of Horace’s Theory that Adversity Leads to Character Development in the Cases of Emmanuel Pacquiao and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Table of Content

According to Horace, obstacles that people face continually are the constituents that mold a person’s character. From financial hardship to devastating misfortune, Horace argues that adversity cultivates the development of a strong personality, which would not have been awakened in favorable circumstances. While hardships may deal a significant toll to one‘s life, Horace’s assertion is correct purely because adversity does bring out people’s talents, Emmanuel Pacquiao, a world-ranking boxer, is a prime example that validates Horace’s assertion. Throughout his childhood, Pacquiao faced continuous adversities. At a young age, his father left the family, leaving Pacquiao forced to take up the role of a father figure for his younger siblings. Additionally, his family was confronted with poverty and hunger, which left him and his family in unfavorable conditions. As a result, he was obligated to earn money by selling bread in his neighborhood.

Eventually, Pacquiao discovered his talent for fighting as he fought against his neighbors for money, he continued on to rise to the top in the world of boxing, triumphing a variety of boxing championships. Without these challenges that he faced as a child, Pacquiao would not have been able to realize his talent. In fact, prosperity would have repressed his talent because he would not have the need to harvest it. Horace’s claim is further reinforced through Martin Luther King Jr. ’5 character development during the mid-20”1 century. Growing up in the southern Jim Crow environment after the Civil War, King confronted difficulty as a child. He faced the horrors of segregation.

After enduring the regular whippings of his father and the loss of a friend due to a segregated society during his childhood, King engaged in the civil rights movement. There, he capably developed his public speaking ability, which he utilized in his peaceful protest speeches. His articulation skills thrived during the movement, as he gained significant attention, and successfully contributed to fortunate outcome of the movement, Had King not faced the adversities of this time period, King would not have been able to bring out his talent. Through his perseverance through this demoralizing dilemma, King exposed his dormant talent and employed it to fight for a cause.
