About the song Gravity by John Mayer

Table of Content

A song that I have enjoyed listening to throughout my life is “Gravity” by John Mayer from his well-known album, Continuum. John Mayer is known for his intense emotions that he portrays through his songs. He specializes in the genre of acoustic pop/rock. His music shows his ability to give a message without words, and only with his electric guitar. In this song, he makes the public aware of how it is inevitable to not encounter several setbacks and struggles in life.

0:00 The song immediately opens with a very calming and slow pace beat of drums. It is quickly followed by a beautiful electric guitar melody. The sounds of these two instruments playing together create a powerful illusion of being alone or lost in a dark space with only the sounds of the drums and electric guitar echoing around you.

0:35 His raspy yet strong voice unexpectedly comes in at full volume. It sounds very soothing and blends perfectly with the steady beat of the drums and electric guitar in the background. This is one of the most significant points of the song where he makes it clear what the message is that he is trying to portray. You can hear the real emotions in his voice when he begins to sing the first lines of the song.

2:15 At this point in the song, he moves into the first verse and his pitch lowers and his overall tone becomes softer. This shows the drastic difference in his emotions compared to when he uses a much higher pitch in the chorus. This point in the song sounds as if he takes a breath to try and communicate reasonably and collect his thoughts after he strongly projected them in the chorus. Eventually, he stops singing and fills the room with an electric guitar solo. This solo projects his true feelings that he is communicating in the song without him using a single word.

3:10 The pace of the song begins to speed up at this point and becomes more hectic. His emotions sound like they are running high and he repeatedly chants what sounds like a prayer to stay in a good place in his life. This dramatic portion of the song is accompanied by a peaceful and uplifting harmony. This makes the message he is giving much more powerful and it is obvious that he is singing his real-life emotions and constant fears. He uses the art of the music to cry for help in this hard time in his life.

Overall, the song “Gravity” by John Mayer is an extremely emotional and empowering song. It creates a sense of unity among all people by making it known that everyone has problems that feel like they could completely tear us down. Society envy’s these super famous artists because they appear to live a life with no problems. This song demonstrates the reality of a famous musician’s life and how he too feels the overpowering weight of his problems. The range of pitch and change in tone in the song shows his true emotions. The acoustic style of the song allows listeners to feel the music like it is truly around them.
