Less than 6 years ago I began my collegiate journey at East Carolina University and like most recent high school graduates I was undecided on my intended major. I was the first person in my family to attend a four-year university and I was navigating through the experience entirely on my own. I boldly chose to pursue a degree in nursing with much excitement and a touch of uncertainty. There were many peaks and valleys after my acceptance into the nursing program but my desire to be an exceptional nurse was steadfast. During my final clinical rotation I developed a trusting and memorable relationship with an intubated patient in the intensive care unit. As I talked him through each medication, procedure and care task that I planned to perform he would give me a gentle head nod to let me know he understood. I informed him that it was my last clinical shift as a nursing student and as I finished with his care for the day I quietly asked if he was comfortable, he gave me his gentle head nod but by surprise he reached out to hold my hand while I watched a tear trickle down his cheek. My preceptor stood by the door and witnessed his silent and sincere thank you and I felt an absolute certainty that my role as a nurse was unquestionable. I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude as I reminisce on my former uncertainty to become a nurse because now I found complete assurance that it was destined for me. My hope is to continue to provide remarkable care at the most advanced level and I strive to learn and grow continuously while pursuing a doctorate degree in the nursing profession.
My goals as a doctoral student include providing the highest quality of care to a diverse population of patients while utilizing nursing research and maintaining a patient centered healthcare model. I hope to develop into an influential nurse leader in the healthcare community by implementing evidence-based care into practice, improving care delivery systems and advancing research to improve patient outcomes. I desire to improve leadership and preparedness for independent practice and contribute to the aesthetic nurse practitioner specialty.
The category of interest for my research translation is clinical leadership and administrative leadership for a Doctorally prepared Nurse Practitioner. Furthermore, I am passionate about the opportunity for nurse practitioners to practice independently and gain more autonomy in a clinical setting. My area of focus would be in aesthetic nursing where I hope to improve the access to high quality dermatology and cosmetic care for the benefit of all patients. On a large scale I would like to promote incorporating aesthetic services into nurse practitioner academia as an opportunity to provide safe and evidence based education and training. As of today there are no specific training requirements for many aesthetic procedures and I am passionate about claiming administration of these services as an advanced practice role.
Upon completion of a doctorate program I hope to provide dermatological and aesthetic care to a diverse group of clients. After gaining experience and expertise in those roles I desire to work more autonomously in a professional practice under physician supervision to provide specialized care. I am eager to treat a wide range of diseases and medical issues that develop on the skin and I hope to help patients feel confident in my ability to prevent progression of skin diseases. Additionally I plan to promote positivity and creativity in the aesthetic field while spending quality time with patients during the consultation, procedure and recovery. In conclusion, I know that Loyola University believes in faith, trust, justice and service and those values align with my own. I realize there is a deep desire to know students on a personal level and help them achieve their goals to improve healthcare. I would be honored to be a part of the program and I have a strong aspiration to be apart of the Loyola Community.
