Measuring of academic performance of students is challenging since student performance is product of socio-economic, psychological and environmental factors. Therefore, this study is conducted to determine the different factors that affect the academic performance of the students of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This paper is a study of the factors affecting the academic performance, the ability to study and remember facts, of the student of Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba. Specifically, it aims to discuss the following points:

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study is limited only to the students of Colegeio de San Juan de Letran- Calamba. The researcher’s data gathering method will be through a survey of 60 students from the campus. This survey will help determine the factors that are affecting the students’ school/academic performance.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents various research findings, literatures and studies from different books, internet sources and principles formulated by experts to have a clear understanding of the study.

As stated by Syed Tahir Hijazi and Raza Naqvi (2006) in their study “Factors Affecting Students’ Performance”, student performance is associated with students’ profile consisting of his attitude towards attendance in classes, time allocation for studies, parents’ level of income, mother’s age and mother’s education. Lane and Porch (2002) studied the factors affecting students’ performance on an introductory undergraduate financial accounting course and found that age and students attitude toward accounting have significant effect on students’ performance.

Karemera (2003) found that students’ performance is significantly correlated with satisfaction with academic environment and service received. He also found that the existence of professional development programs and internship opportunities are associated with better academic performance. With regard to background variables, he found a positive effect of high school performance and school achievement while there was no statistical evidence of significant association between family income level and academic performance.

El-Shaarawi et.al (2006), found out that hard work, previous schooling, parents’ education, family income and self motivation as factors that have a significant effect on the students’ academic performance. They also concluded that cultural differences play an important role in shaping the factors that affects the student’s performance.
