information | Short biography of George OrwellGeorge Orwell, whose real name was Eric Arthur Blair, was born in Motihari, Bengal, India, on 25 June 1903. His father, Richard Walmesley Blair, worked for the opium department of the Indian Civil Service. His mother, Ida Mabel Blair (née Limouzin), brought him up in England. He was the grandson of two Anglican missionaries in China in the 1850s.In 1904, Orwell moved with his mother and sister to Henley, a town in Oxfordshire. His father joined them there later. Orwell was educated at a number of schools, including St Cyprian’s, a preparatory school in Eastbourne, Sussex. He later went to Eton, where he was a King’s Scholar.After leaving Eton, Orwell joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. He served there for five years, from 1922 to 1927. During this time, he started writing for publications such as the Burma Daily News and The Spectator.In 1928, Orwell returned to England and began working as a journalist. He also started writing his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London, about his experiences of poverty and homelessness. The book was published in 1933.In 1936, Orwell went to Spain to fight for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. He was wounded and had to return to England. He wrote about his experiences in the war in the book Homage to Catalonia, published in 1938.In 1939, Orwell married Eileen O’Shaughnessy. The couple had a son, Richard Horatio Orwell, who was born in 1940. Orwell and his family moved to a farm on the island of Jura, off the coast of Scotland, in 1946.Orwell’s most famous book, Nineteen Eighty-Four, was published in 1949. The book is about a society where the government controls everything and the people are kept under strict control.Orwell died of tuberculosis on 21 January 1950. He was only 46 years old.
