I Want to Take a Faculty Role in a Medical School

Table of Content

Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated with the workings of the perfect living machine- The human body. It built in me a passion for medicine which was further heightened by the high esteem that my family and the community have for this noble profession. I grew up in a community with only a small dispensary to dispose medical needs of all the people. This strengthened my overarching passion to become the one, who can take on the challenge of addressing ever increasing medical needs. I was determined to make a difference in the lives of my patients and leave a legacy of patient care excellence to future generations. This aspiration gets the support it needs with my commitment to a learning process that has continually taken new knowledge and widened my perspectives over the years.

I successfully hurdled the difficult admission to Gandhi Medical College and became the first person from my hometown to get admission into a medical school. In the process I have also inspired and motivated my juniors at school to take up this profession. My firsthand exposure to various medical cases in all my clerkships and rotations served to heighten my resolve to become a competent physician. Thanks to our wonderful professor, Dr. Sunitha Krishna, who became my role model with her career dedication, compassion, and selfless caring for her patients, I have complemented my medical training with the same qualities that I know will endear me to my patients and secure my future as a competent and caring physician. My final year in medical school has been an invigorating experience which channeled my interest towards internal medicine by its challenging and analytically appealing aspects. I finally rooted my career direction to be an Internist and enhanced my competencies through several learning milestones, both in the academe and in professional and volunteer engagements over the years.

At this juncture in my career, I realize I still have so much to learn to succeed in my profession. I hope to build my reputation as a general practitioner with analytical thinking and cross-functional team building skills in managing complex medical cases involving multi-organ failures. I now look to a residency program that can coalesce my clinical competencies in oncology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, obstetrics & gynecology, endocrinology, pathology, and infectious disease control obtained through various clinical rotations during medical school. I believe a residency training in Internal Medicine would be foundational in this direction. No other medical specialty will bring me to build closer doctor-patient relationship across the broadest range of diseases to patients across the widest diversity, both from a non-surgical curative and preventive approach, than Internal Medicine.

After completing my residency, I plan to take greater responsibilities as a board-certified Internist in a high-volume medical facility. I hope to be regarded as a caring and competent physician to my patients and build relationships, with which I can educate them to lead healthier lifestyles, reminding them that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of care. On the side, I plan to participate in research projects while taking volunteer work in outreach programs addressing the needs of impoverished and underserved communities here and overseas. Further down the road, I plan to take a faculty role in a medical school or teaching hospital where I can help shape young aspiring doctors to reach their fullest potential and, in the process, give back to society what I have been fortunate to receive in building my career.
