Shakespeare wrote many plays that the younger generation would not have a clue as to what he is trying to say without the help of an instructor.Plays and poems are not understood by many people without the help of their peers making it easier for them to understand. Shakespeares plays are really hard to understand without the help of peers or a teacher. Plays always have a certain point to which they are trying to get across and the reader may not fully see it until the end of the play. In Shakespeare OthelloThe main purpose or focus is jealousy. Many of the characters involved in the play display some kind of jealousy towards one another.
A part of the play that displays jealousy would be when Brabantio gets upset with Othello because Othello has taken his daughter from him. At first Brabantio thinks that Othello has put some type of spell on his daughter Desdemona and he wants to kill Othello because of it. O thou foul thief, where hast thou stowed my daughter? Damned as thou art, thou hast enchanted her. For Ill refer me to all things of sense Brabantio was upset and jealous because Othello has come between Desdemona and he (Brabantio) and he (Brabantio) could not do nothing to stop it from happening. Brabantio told Othello that Desdemona will one day leave him the same as she did her father Brabantio. Look to her, Moor, if thou hast eyes to see. She has deceived her father, and may thee. Brabantio was jealous and upset at this event because he did not have the say-so that he wanted. He disliked Othello greatly because he took his little girl away from him. I think Brabantio was racist and did not want to see his little girl falling for a black man.
Another example of jealousy shown in this play is between Cassio and Othello. Othello took the only girl Cassio was ever truly in love with away from him. Cassio and Iago planned out a way to get Desdemona in bed with him (Cassio). Iago was hoping that once Cassio and Desdemona went to bed with one another that Desdemona would fall for Cassio as was Cassio hoping for the same thing. Yet I beseech you. If you think fit, or that it may be done, Give me advantage of some brief discourse. With Desdemona alone. Cassio did not want Desdemona to love Othello because he loved her very much and wanted for her to love him in the same way. Cassio was very jealous of Othello because he comes to realize that he could not do anything to stop Desdemona from loving Othello.
Othello becomes jealous because he thinks that Desdemona has been with another man by the name of Cassio. And have you mercy too! I never did offend you in my life, never loved Cassio. But with such general warranty of Heaven as I might love. I never gave him token. No matter what Desdemona tried to tell Othello, he would never believe her. He was jealous of Cassio because he thought that Cassio was the first to sleep with Desdemona, when in fact, Othello was the first and only one Desdemona ever went to bed with. Othello would not even listen to his own wife because he was so hard-headed and set in his ways that he knew everything. He murdered his own wife for no reason and once he found out she only told him the truth, he then committed suicide.
Jealousy is a major focus of this play and if people just would have listened to others or went different ways all the deaths would have never occurred. Jealousy is still a major problem in the world we live in today and people are killing others because they have something they dont. This problem, as well as others, will always face us every morning we wake up and go outside.
