In The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, the concept of external and uncontrollable forces determining people’s lives is explored. This notion can be unsettling as individuals yearn for autonomy over their own destinies. The novel centrally revolves around Santiago, a shepherd, and his arduous quest for a treasure that symbolizes his unique purpose or “Personal Legend”. Coelho effectively employs the motif of omens, guiding Santiago throughout his journey, to convey the theme that fulfilling one’s predestined ambitions and finding meaning in life requires active pursuit.
The primary factor that guides Santiago is the various signs and omens he encounters. Throughout the novel, there are subtle indications of the choices Santiago should make. The first omen appears in his dream and meeting with the gypsy and the King of Salem, where he is transported to the Egyptian pyramids and told that “if you come here, you will find a hidden treasure” (Coelho 13-14). These signs persist when Santiago becomes discouraged after working with the crystal merchant, but the two stones, Urim and Thummim, given to him by the King fall out of his jacket. This prompts Santiago to reconsider and remember that the King had instructed him to “Never stop dreaming” (Coelho 62) and “Follow the omens” (Coelho 62) like this one. These omens are what lead Santiago to make the choices he does. Additionally, he discovers his true purpose that he must fulfill. As a result, he decides to embark on a search for the treasure, and the Universe communicates this goal to him.
Throughout Santiago’s journey, he continues to receive omens that aid him in completing his mission. This includes his venture through the desert and stay at the oasis, where the vision of hawks warns him of an imminent attack. According to Coelho (103), God reveals a future that can be altered. Additionally, at the pyramids, Santiago is given another omen when he sees a scarab beetle scuttling through the sand where his tears had fallen (Coelho 161). Both omens play a crucial role in helping Santiago fulfill his destiny. The vision saves the oasis from an attack that could have hindered his journey, while digging where his tears had fallen leads him to men who reveal the location of the treasure. These omens provide the necessary guidance for Santiago to create a life where he fulfills his destiny.
Coelho conveys the message of the importance of pursuing one’s predestined dream and life mission. This theme is communicated through the repeated use of omens that guide Santiago on his “Personal Legend”. These omens serve as guidance for Santiago, helping him make decisions that ultimately lead to the successful outcome of his journey. Without these omens, Santiago would have been unaware of his personal quest. The omens he receives are uncontrollable forces, but it is Santiago’s determination to follow them that allows his destiny to unfold. While one’s destiny may not be within their control, it is the individual’s responsibility to actively pursue it.
