During these last three weeks I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge in my volunteering experience with Martha Ayala and her commercial cleaning company, Martha’s General Cleaning. Together with this experience and my educational experience at GCU, I can see how I was academically prepared to take on an opportunity helping Martha prepare, develop, and create templates, spreadsheets, letters, and the various other documents share din the weekly journals.
One particular course that I feel stood out as I was volunteering with Martha was my Marketing class I took a few months ago. When I helped Martha create bid proposals she taught me her method of how she looks up potential clients. I was able to tie in the knowledge from my marketing class by researching as much about the particular clients Martha likes to service as well as the location radius she likes to limit herself to.
I believe the classes I have taken towards achieving my Bachelors in Applied Management has given me great tools to assist me in the future as I continue to grow within the company I am currently employed. Several classes like Servant Leadership, Human Resources, and Project Management were some of the most knowledge filled classes I have seen to be useful for me as I have been in my role and can see how they can aid me as I continue to grow and learn more about my future ambitions and goals.
Considering various area of student life, taking part in extracurricular activities would have been a great opportunity for me to have gotten a lot more out of Grand Canyon University. Due to my work life as well as personal and student life, I was limited to taking part in various other parts that GCU has to offer and I believe it would have given me a better opportunity to socialize, network, and connect with a particular part of the GCU culture. Professor Baron Smith is one particular person who has stood out during my time at GCU. He was very informative, cooperative, and understanding to our educational needs and knew how to portray the information in a practical and memorable way.
An example of this, was the role playing we did on one of our class sessions where each student played the role of either HR or worker and we all role played different scenarios that the Human Resource department has most likely seen. This event stood out a lot when I sat down with my site supervisor to go over the five questions about her previous interview experience and all the type of scenarios she has seen. Grand Canyon University has positively shaped my experience as a student and have seen the care and integrity of the professors I have had for the last 2 years. Aside of providing the class based knowledge of the different topic each course dealt with, every instructor shared Bible passages of how it tied to the educational learning for the week as well as prayer threads like this class.
These experiences have impacted my future as I hope to lead in a style that cares for her followers and is a role model for others to see that the needs of other must be put first before ones are taken care of. Lastly, all the classes in one way or another have stood out as far as how they will help me in my professional life. I see these experiences as ways to examine myself and see what path I want to take in the current company I work for as well as what I want to branch myself to when I see which particular area I do want to develop in.
Reflecting on other areas of my volunteering experience I could see in myself the ability I have in being able to learn and apply my knowledge in the work I produce. I want to be able to continue to learn as much as I am possibly capable of and produce professional and efficient work that is appropriate to the company that I work for or will work for in the future. I feel I can offer more than what I feel limited to and want to be able to develop more skills and master those skills to broaden my knowledge and experiences. All the documents I created were helpful in seeing how they are used in a company and would like to see how other companies also use the same and even different methods of created documents that are vital to their everyday business.
