Do you have friends that you group? What group do you put them in? Like almost everyone else, we tend to group our friends from the closest to us to friends that were barely know and just wave Hi to. Whatever group we categorize them into, they are a part of our life that makes us feel complete and allow us to be socializing.
Without these types of friends we group them in, we will be friendless and unentertained.Similarly to what Winik have mention, I also have friends that I categorize as former friend, new friends, and a hero friend; however, I would like to add a new category to the friends and that most people have, which is the best friend category. Winik presented in “What Are Friends For? ” introduce that we will have friend group in a former friend that we wish we would not have. In this type of former friend, she describes the relationship to be, “ A sad thing.
At best a wistful memory, at worst a dangerous enemy who is possession of many of your deepest secrets,” Winik believes that these friends are the dangerous friends because these friends know every little thing about you and you won’t be able to determine their next move (472). I think what Winik is saying about this former friend is true, because I use to have a former friend and they know almost every secret there is to know about me. When the relationship went downhill so did my secrets and memories.My former friend use to be my best friend and that is what make it sad so see the relationship end in a bad term and never speak again.
These are the friends that I wish not have or make one. I believe that former friend is what makes some of us afraid and scare to make new friends. Also, Winik has mentioned another example of friends is the new friends. A relationship with a new friends is like, “almost falling in love,” because it is like finding a new friend to tell secret and share common liking with (473).
I think having a new friend are a new beginning of something good, ecause you never know what he or she will be in the future, and it kind of like a connection or networking. When I meet someone new I always want the relationship to last for a long time, because I wanted him or her to be a part of my life. College would be a great place to meet new friends because these friends are the friends that will be a part of your life. I’ve met three wonderful friends that I do almost everything with and we have a great relationships and hoping that our new friendship will last a lifetime.
Everyone loves meeting someone new. Last example of friend that Winik has suggested is we have hero friends. These hero friends are the greatest people of all, “They are modest. They never gossip.
They are always helping others,” with this friend you are always looking up to them and admiring their life at time (473). I have a friend sister who I sometime admire. She is a Shamanism that is like a psychic, means she helps cure sick people spiritually.She helps them by “Ua Neeg” or fortune telling and that basically is she enter a “ghost world” and try to bring his/her wondering spirit back to the human world.
Also, many elder people and younger adult look up to her and praise for her help in the Hmong community. Therefore, she is always helping people as much as she can on her time. Like hero friends she always comforting people and trying to make them feel happy as much as she can. I believe those hero friends are impressive friend we will have.
On the other hand, Winik should have added another group of friend, best friend. Throughout our life we have a best friend that are male/female friend, husband/wife, our brother/sister that goes through everything with us and have seen our greatest moment to our worst. Also, Winik have mentioned a similar friend, buddies, who “call you up, they listen to your complaints, they celebrate your successes and curse your misfortune,” that is similar to what a best friend would do with you and vise versa (471).No matter how many argument or fight you both have, you guy can laugh it out and forgive one another.
If one did a mistake, best friends are able to tell you and be straightforward with you and tell you your wrongs. They finish your sentences and know you the back of their head. Best friend are the one that only know the inside joke and laugh with you while other stare. In conclusion, we all need friends; no matter what group we put them in, from friends we are close too, to friends we barely know.
We need these friends to helps us throughout our life, to share story with. Winik had good example of the group of friends she had listed. Because I have friends of my own, I also have them group the way winik have, former friend, new friend and hero friend but I think Winik should have another group for best friend. Friends is what makes our life entertaining and amazing when we are bored out our life, without friend we will be a loner with no one to share laughter with or story.
Be grateful to have these types of friends, they all have an impact on our lives.
