Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and political activist. She was born in slavery but escaped and subsequently made 13 missions to rescue seventy enslaved people including her family and friends. Tubman’s Early Years and Escape from Slavery. Harriet Tubman’s name at birth was Armenta Ross. She was one of 11 children of Harriet and Benjamin Ross born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland. Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom in the North in 1849. She wanted to help black people escape slavery, so she built an underground railroad where she can help enslaved African Americans. The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early to mid-19th century, and used by African-American slaves to escape into free states.
The Underground Railroad was a lifeline for slaves escaping to freedom, and Harriet Tubman was undoubtedly one of its most famous ‘conductors.’ Over one hundred years since her passing. Harriet tubman was an Abolitionist. A abolitionist is someone who is against slavery such as Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman could have easily been caught and been sent to death. They would burn them and do all these other things that would be horrible. Harriet Tubman believed that all people should be free and treated equally. Also she fought in the civil war to free slaves.
How was Harriet Tubman such a hero? Harriet tubman risked her life with the underground railroad because if Harriet Tubman was ever caught she would be sentenced to death because in the South they all believed in slavery and was different from the North where it was very peaceful and slavery was not a thing. For example the Americas split into two. The North and the South, The north and the south were very different from each other one believed in slavery and the other one didn’t. Another way that they were different was that the South’s economy was based on agriculture for example the slaves had to pick cotton. Then the North just had factories and they were producing by people.
During the Civil War, Tubman worked for the Union army as a nurse, a cook, and a spy. Her experience leading slaves along the Underground Railroad was especially helpful because she knew the land well. She led people to the free states. Another person that was a great influence to the black community was frederick douglass. Frederick douglass Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York.

He was an abolitionist, human rights and women’s rights activist. He pressed the antislavery cause through his newspaper, the Liberator. He wrote the novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, convincing Northerners that slavery was evil. He was a former slave who spoke out against the institution of slavery. Frederick Douglass believed the Constitution was an anti-slavery document. Frederick Douglass believed the United States Constitution was itself an anti-slavery document, a view that differed sharply from that of some abolitionists in the mid-19th century.
On the other hand, another great person who changed the course of history was a man named Martin Luther King. Martin luther king once said,”’Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.’ What Martin luther king means by this is that even though us african americans are treated unfairly we will still will not go so low as to hate the white people. Martin luther king Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. Martin luther King ended racial segregation and discrimination in America during the 1950s and 1960s and a leading spokesperson for nonviolent methods of achieving social change.
