When you read a book you have it is a must to use your imagination to build the world of your book. A person must use their mind to be able to describe what they think a character may sound like, look like, mannerisms, clothes they would wear, and where they live. But when is comes to most movies, sadly the use of your imgaination is not needed. In the movie industry today it has become common practice to adept a book into a movie. But with the legnths most movies run, which is about an hour and a half to two hours you would not be able to include all the details of the book.
So sadly you loose out on some of the content as well as plot changes from time to time. In the following paragraphs the differences between the movie and book will be examined as well as the possible reasons why the changes were made and how they effect the overall story and feelings we have for the characters. he help we get many details about the characters. We read about their height, body types, their style as well as a deep look at their personalties. The most misrepresented character in the book is Skeeter.
While reading it is often stated that Skeeter is a tall awkward looking women with crazy curly hair who dosent seem to fit in with the other socialite girls in her group. But when it comes to the movie Skeeter is is not much taller then anyone else, dose not come off awkward at all and is very gorgeuous. Also in the book Skeeter brings Abelene books from the local library that she really wanted to read. While in the movie this does not happen which robs us of a deeper side of Abelenes inner preferences reading classics of the time other then just reading women magazines or other books of that type.
Another segement of the book that was left out and hurts the overall movie is how Skeeter finds out about Constantine. While in the book there is a deep longing for Skeeter to find out the truth while in the movie it just pops at early in the movie. Movies can only be so long. Most everyday people will refuse to pay and sit through a movie that is three to four hours long. If people wont pay for it movie companies will not make it, so a lot of the time content gets cut. Money is always a factor in movies.
If there was a bigger budget it could be possible to add extra characters that are needed for some scenes that may be cut. Also a book does not always transer to screen as easily as you would expect, so slower parts might get removed or replaced. When you lose content you lose a perspective of a character. Even if it is small or seems insignificant it could always matter in a future event and removing that previous segment may take away from what could be a more powerful scene. In the Help movie we lose many different perspectives of the characters.
With Skeeters mother the movie completely removes any mystery of her sickness that explains why she may be so strick on Skeeter and why she wants her with a man so badly. With Abelene we lost a personal side of her. The death of her son Treelore is hardly mentioned in the movie while in the book it is an extensive topic that really shows why she is so loving to Mae Mobley. In the book the reader connects with Abelene through the death of her son and why its so much harder for her to see the child she looks after mistreated and left behind by her mother, while in the movie the relationship between Mae Mobey and her mother seem almost normal.
Even one of the most important parts of plot involving Minny was changed for the worse in the movie. While in the book the “terrible thing” that Minny did is a mystery the entire book leaves the readers wondering what did she do that could be so unbeliavbly terrible the Hilly would do everything in her power to destory her. Even the confession of what she did was different. Her confession to her employer connected them as almost friends in a way nobody would ever expect to see out of Minny.
While in the movie all that happens is Minny basicly come clean about it to everyone without any suspense or build up at all When people are told the book is better they usually feel that the person telling them just wants to brag that they actually read a story instead of just waiting for the movie. But in the case of The Help I would whole heartdly agree that thebook is better then the movie in almost every way. In the book the characters are deeper and more complex. The over all story arch feels to have a much better flow, and cutting out so many parts of the book as well as changing the story structure over all hinder it.
If you could only choose one in this case the book is the clear winner of this contest. Paul Johnson2008-11-18T19:47:58. 59There is a page break after the body.
