My supervisor introduced me to my colleagues and helped me through the intern induction process. Then I visited all the buildings within the hospital and got familiar with my working environment. Even if the administration building and outpatient building were separate, there was an aisle connecting the two buildings together for convenience I needed to set up my entrance card to access all buildings. As a benefit to be employed in hospital, employees could enjoy cheap and delicious meals in the hospital-owned cafeteria, which received a subsidy from the government. I worked in the international Cooperation and Exchange depanment, which belongs to dean’s office. What I learned was that under the public hospital system, the dean’s office consists of audit department, a red cross-department, an emergency department and a legal affair department.
I noticed that the seat design within office is associated with the job position. Like my supervisor, who is the director of the department, she had her own office. However, other colleagues and I would share the rest of the office, which seemed a bit crowded. This week, I worked on the historical journal of Shanghai General Hospital from 1987 to 1993. Therefore, I got a chance to know about the development of hospitals. While writing, I realize that the development of hospital cannot do without donation from society and any other medical organizations. Promoting the communication and cooperating with other western countries were also relatively imponam to strength hospital’s reputation and enhance the level of Chinese medical care. Led by my mentor, I got a chance to visit the upper-division management organization called Shenkang Healthcare Center and I realized that most of the imponant documents had to report to here for approval because Shenkang oversaw our hospital’s operation.
Every year, our hospital sent a great number of doctors and nurses to attend conference or study abroad in western countries. Therefore, I filled out the application forms for their visit and posted an announcement on the website about the list of people, Second week I continued to work on the historical journal from 1994 to 2003 and worked on the research topic called the difference and Similarities of health care system in China, UK and US. Furthermore, I helped my leader Lily to collect and organize the materials from who want to apply for advanced study in western countries, In fact, the whole process was complicated and time-consumed, Those who want to participate the meetings or studying abroad need to provide some related information like financial support, invitation letters, and conference‘s schedule for getting their official passports from government.
In addition, these people must undergo political examination and receive approval from different departments. Myjob was to record all information online for reporting to Shanghai Foreign Affair Office. One of the rules I felt interesting is that wherever employee goes, the days for attending the meeting is strictly limited for only 5 days. Additionally. most of fee for attending meeting or studying oversea were supported by research funding or other organization donation. The strict regulation made me think about the importance role of government within public hospital and the complexity of sending professionals abroad: government worries about the loss of professionals but at the same time, the government wants those professionals to learn from new techniques and innovations of others. Third-week at the beginning of the week, I went to archive room to borrow the documents of our hospital history‘ I had seen many documents preserved and reserved in perfect condition within the hospital and continued to work on the history journal of Shanghai General Hospital.
Additionally, I started to do research about the differences and similarities of healthcare system in China and the US, In the rest of week, I met Chloe, who is another intern from UK, I visited our International Medical Care Center with her. I shadowed Dr.Shen, the director of International Medical Care Center (IMCC) as well as general practitionert I realized that besides the patients from foreign countries, IMCC also accepted VIP Chinese patients, who were willing to paid extra money to stay in IMCC care unit At another 8 o’clock morning. I joined the daily meeting before morning round at IMCC and discussed the best treatments plan for the new patients. All nurses and doctors wrote down diagnosis and medication. I was surprised to find out that lMCC had different style of decoration between sinpatient and outpatient department within the hospital. 95% of rooms in lMCC were not occupied and had more luxurious facilities than any other departments had.
However, in any other department, it was easy to see patients sleeping in the hallway because most of room was full. This made me think about efficiency of the resource allocation in hospital. I thought of the reformation needed to take place in Chinese healthcare system. Fourth week I worked on another small research topic called the importance of international connection with other hospitals and the consequence of promoting the international communication. 1 continued to work on doctor and nurses‘ political check form and helped deliver the materials to Foreign Affair Office of Shanghai for final approval. Even if we had submitted the form online, we still needed to do the material delivery in person. This made me realize the inefficiency of process and the difficulties of sending professionals abroad. What‘s more, I worked on Excel to record the information about the previous collaboration contracts of our hospital and found out that our hospital not only have collaborate with foreign hospitals but also the peripheral hospitals, such as hospitals in the Hongkou distinct.
The purpose of collaboration is to effectively improve the medical care standard in the peripheral hospital and provide essential supplies and services as they needed. This week I also got taste of taking medicine from the pharmacy The process was to use the self-service machine to book an appointment with specific doctors, then wait in the lobby for call, see the doctors and pay the fee, and take the receipt to the pharmacy. 1 saw the different experience of seeing a doctor in the US and China In US, we provide private insurance to hospital first, then see the doctors, and pay the bill later after few days. However, in China, most of people have social insurance card to see the doctors and pay the bill in the same day.
