How do you know when something is `literary` and when it is not?

Illustrate your answer with various examples from your own reading experience. Literature is creative writing with an imaginative essence that captures readers’ attention through dialogue and metaphoric style. Poems, essays, and sonnets are considered literary because of their elements of style that grasps my attention. Literature demands subtle attention of the mind and the soul; thus, many writers use metaphors, similes, and other mechanics to express their thoughts.

I can recognize the elements of an artists’ mentality by the use of language in their literary works. Writers whom use conventional sequences in their work are considered a bit dull in my eyes. I consider unconventional language usage and reasonable construction of their plots throughout the prose. I can recognize the dynamics of a copy by looking at its word usage throughout its documents. Technical documents such as instructional manuals, computer-oriented methods in description are not considered literary works.

A writer must use concise, direct language in order to meet their objective. Literature uses less ‘stiff’ jargon to explain one’s imagination through elegant descriptions. For example, a marketing consultant memo may use jargon such as return on investment (RIO), break-even analysis, and venture capital. To the foreign reader, they can not use their imaginations to understand the dynamics of the industry. So, the writer’s influences are a bit hard to understand if I am not accustomed to their lingo.

When you think of research and research writing, what comes to mind? What does research mean to you?

I consider research an attempt to verify facts with figures, argument statements, and logical conclusions. Research is the means at which a writer has a choice to sift, choose, and synthesize resources to supply their reader with an overall idea of what they consider important or significant. The information acquired through research distinguishes the writer’s ideas to that of previous scholars interested in adapting newer angles of consideration.

For example, I would need political information, background histories, and samples of two writers’ works if I were to compare Edgar Allen Poe with Henry Thoreau. My research would use these three elements to establish an angle of verification. With that in mind, my research will create a new wave of questions that should be addressed according to each writer’s lifestyles. My explanations of their work will direct my readers into an arena of unlimited possibilities. Research means an act of organized thoughts, logical conclusions, and thorough analysis of resources.

In research, I must re-evaluate resources used by previous writers in order to cover unseen ideas that could have changed the minds of the topic’s forefathers. This may be just my perception, but I like to complete a list of questions that are probing my mind when I hear of an inaccurate description. For example, if someone where to argue that determinism and free will are intertwined by sociological and psychological means – I would find texts or resources to refute it.

My intentions would be to ask questions that weaken an argument then pursue the correct answers that may create a logical picture for my readers. The best issues are solved by creating an issue regarding the literary effects of a piece of writing. My intentions are to leave an impression on my reader that ‘there are more answers’ to what they may believe.

What is plagiarism and why is it important to avoid it in your writing? What is the function of documentation?

Plagiarism is an act of unlawful citation of another’s writing without giving proper recognition to the author’s hard work. Writers have made numerous mistakes using quotes from a text without documenting its year, author, publisher, and other important facts for readers to review. When writing, it is important to note the page numbers, editions, and other facts regarding the resource in order for teachers to check behind our conclusions. This is important in the academic field because scholar integrity. I feel that all writers must practice this because I would like to receive the recognition for my hard work as well. Citations act as the leading principles of academic integrity.

It is my responsibility to avoid plagiarizing my work because it could cause academic penalties such as suspension from the school. I understand how to use my references because I do not want to experience or receive a bad reputation because of a mistake. Now, I take time to check and re-check my sources just as much as my instructors. I have noticed that there are numerous problems associated with documenting online sources today. Recently, there has been a new way of citing online sources through certain machines, but I find the old way better – double check and place them in the right format.
