Severe Weather: How to Prepare and Survive

Table of Content

Severe weather can cause extremely bad damage to homes, cars, buildings, trees, and much more. In extreme weather conditions like this, one must be prepared for what is coming towards them in order to survive. Sometimes one must pack their things and evacuate, or stock up on supplies like water, food, and blankets. Some very bad types of storms are hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards.

Hurricanes

Hurricanes are very dangerous. They are formed by wind blowing over warm ocean water creating clouds. Once the winds are blowing hard enough in a circle, a hurricane is formed. The winds of a hurricane have to be blowing at least 74 miles per hour to be classified as a hurricane. In the middle of a hurricane there is an eye. The eye is the only place in the hurricane that is somewhat calmer and way less windier than the rest of the hurricane. Some effects a hurricane can have on a town or someplace near the ocean are heavy rainfalls, which leads to flooding, and hurricane are strong enough to move buildings, trees, and animal’s. As stated in source one, “The winds of hurricane can be strong enough to move animal’s, trees, and even buildings.”

Tornadoes

Tornadoes can cause great damage. A tornado starts from a thunderstorm. When wet, warm air collides with cool, dry air, thunderclouds form. Then, very strengthful winds spin in a circle, and once the wind hits the ground, a tornado forms. Tornadoes can be so powerful, that whole towns can be destroyed in around only ten minutes. An EF5 is the most powerful kind of tornado and can have wind up to and even higher than 200 miles per hour. Effects that a tornado can have include cars being crushed by trees that were ripped out of the ground, homes being crushed, and everything destroyed. As stated in source two, “In less than ten minutes, the town was destroyed and ten people lost their lives.”

Blizzards

Blizzards are very dangerous. A blizzard is formed when great amounts of snow falls at once. A blizzard can have winds up to thirty-five miles per hour. While many other snow storms can be very dangerous, a blizzard is the worst of them all. If blizzards are really bad, then when you are driving you won’t be able to see anything. They can consist of heavy snow, ice, sleet, and freezing rain. They can also have below freezing temperatures that can be so bad, that you have to stay inside all day long. When a blizzard comes, one should be prepared by having water, blankets, firewood, flashlights, and much more. As stated in source three, “For blizzards, you can prepare by having extra blankets, firewood, batteries, flashlights, rock salt for melting ice, and extra canned goods.”

In conclusion, bad weather can be very dangerous and one should always take caution. Weather conditions such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards are all very dangerous and can have extremely bad effects on simple little towns or places near the ocean. Those are some effects that bad weather can have on places.
