She heard someone laughing inside the house.

The reader can infer that someone is trying to get their attention. However Jem thinks different of these pennies, and told Scout they could be something for a good luck, also the pennies could be important to somebody. 7. What character trait do Jem and Scout illustrate with their ambivalence about taking the pennies? Jem and Scout, have no intention of taking the pennies, because they feel that they’ve been saved. Jem is worried it might be some child’s bus money.
