In chapter 9 Simon awakens and once he’s on his feet he notices the lord of the flies. He then begins to shout into the clearing asking ‘ that else is there to After receiving no reply he begins to stagger his way up the mountain. When he reaches the top he notices the body of the parachutist and realizes that the boys have mistaken the beastie for the parachutist. Simon then untangles the lines from the rock and sets the parachute free.
Simon turns toward the beaches and notices that the boys have shifted their action on the island. Simon assumes that the boys have changed locations so they can be further away from the beast and he begins to stagger his way back down the mountain towards the boys to tell them about his his discovery. Meanwhile, Piggy suggests that himself and Ralph should go to Jacks party to make sure nothing goes wrong. When they arrived at the party Jack offers them some food. Afterwards Jack asked if anybody else wanted to join his tribe.
Ralph points out that he is still chief but Ralph ignores his point and rambles on. Ralph mentions that he has the conch buttock is quick to mint out that he doesn’t actually have the conch and the conch rule doesn’t apply at that end of that island. Rain clouds begin to form and lightning begins to flash. Ralph questions Jack on the shelters. In response jack commands the boys to do their dance. Jack stumbled his way into the open space and the boys followed. Roger begins to act like a pig and the boys grab on to their weapons.
They begin to move in a circle and they start chanting words. The littlest moved outside the circle. Ralph and Piggy join in on the dancing and chanting. Soon after Roger retires from being a pig and becomes hunter like the other boys leaving the ring empty. Soon a figure begins to emerge from the the forest and Summary (continued) stumbled into the into the the ring. Let was Simon. At the moment they boys hadn’t realized it was Simon and thought it was the beast. Simon was now in the center in the ring on his knees with his arms folded around him.
Simon attempts to tell them over the noise about the dead body on top of the hill but failed to do so. He broke his way out the ring but the boys followed and began to attack Simon and end up killing him. It begins rain a heavy downpour and the boys scattered. Simons dead body is washed into the ocean and the wind causes the parachutist to fall from the mountain down on to the beach which causes the boys to scream in terror. Analysis Near the beginning of the chapter, Simon asks the Lord of the Flies, “What else is there to do? ” (145).
This shows his loss of sanity as he talks to this pig head expecting a response and not yet realizing he had been hallucinating previously. He then stumbles about and finds that the “beastie” is actually a dead parachutist (146). This is sort of a representation of hope as he finds there is no beastie and that it was all a figment of imagination, a fearing of he unknown. If he can relay this message to everyone, perhaps a peace could be brought through the boys with the elimination of fear of a harmless “beast. ” He then is shown staggering down the mountaintop (147. This displays the characteristics of an elderly man, along with his loss of sanity and other variables. Also, Piggy and Ralph are shown as finding themselves wanting to take place in Jack’s tribe because although it may be twisted they feel a sense of security (152). This shows that Piggy and Rally’s sense of being civilized are diminishing and are wanting to take place in more primitive behavior. This feels reminiscent of when Adam and Eve (Piggy and Ralph) were being tempted by the snake (Jack) to eat the apple (joining in their primitive behavior).
It shows the hidden need of human nature to be want to be wild and chaotic even though you’re aware it will do no good for you. Later during their incantation Simon appears and the group acts as though he’s some sort of beast or animal and start to attack him, biting and tearing at his flesh eventually killing him. They are so caught up in their dance they fail to recognize another human being and kill him in a very disturbing way. Gilding s really trying to get across the point that we all have hidden bestial qualities and it’s just a matter of what it takes for that to be unleashed.
This is event is when Jack and his tribe can rightfully be called full fledged savages. Analysis (continued) The dead parachutist is shown being carried by the wind to the beach, scaring the boys away running muck in chaos (153). Finally, on the last page, Simony’s dead body is shown being washed up into the river (154). This shows that with Simony’s body being washed away, so is the truth of the “beastie” gone, and that they will continue to live their savage lives in fear and hopelessness.
